Letters from Allan Morris, former ALP member for Newcastle

Shortly after the dismal NUSA rally, I noticed Allan Morris - then ALP member for Newcastle - made a speech against VSU in the House of Representatives.

I wrote to him on the 13th May 1999 to state my belief that student organisations can be wasteful of compulsorily-acquired funds, with the rally demonstrating this.

No reply! On June 29th, I wrote to Allan Morris again, expressing my disappointment I had not heard from him, because I was under the impression most parliamentarians had a one-month turn-around policy for correspondence.

Finally, Mr. Morris spake thus on July 19th, 1999 - and the following is his unedited reply, formatted exactly as received:

i am surprised that you would expect an answer to your totally political
letter. it really is nonsensical for you
to attempt to maintain your election campaign. as for vsu then your position
is clearly that of the incredible attempting to defend the indefensible.
allan morris

What a strange reply! Indeed, the relationship between the NSW State elections and the Federal issue of VSU is still unknown to me! Needless to say, great mirth followed, however, at the remarkable letter-writing skills of this Federal ALP member and his clear aversion to capitalism!
