Mike's 2 Cents

Sunny Delight ended their season last night with a win making that two straight and winning six of their last seven games. The past two games against Black Ice and Elephant Riders were very similar and saw Sunny Delight struggle greatly in both games in the first half. The first halves of both games are the only negative parts of Sunny Delights otherwise successful weekend.

In the first game against Black Ice the Sunny Delight were down 5-2 at the end of the first half. After the week off nobody on the team was playing hard but that would quickly change. In the second half with a pep talk from team captain Jason Brito, the team exploded on both offense and defense scoring four unanswered goals and shutting down Black Ice completely. Sunny D eventually won in overtime from a goal by Jason. Both Jason and Mike Riggi continued their offensive brilliance with hat tricks, and Joe Riggi rejuvenated his offensive career by topping the night with four assists. Jenn had trouble in the beginning of the game, but really improved in the second half and made some key saves to keep Sunny D alive.

For the second game Sunny Delight played Elephant Riders to a 7-5 victory. Sunny Delight again struggled in the first half but another speech at half from Jason Brito had the team playing like they know they could. Sunny D literally dominated the second half and controlled the puck almost the entire half. With the final 3 minutes of the game Sunny Delight played their best hockey of the season. Jason, Brian, Mike and Joe did everything right and controlled the puck beautifully.

This weekend was really a great push for Sunny Delight going into the playoffs. Here are the reasons...

Joe Riggi really picked up his game towards the end of the season. Joe always did a nice job on defense but was great on offense. He clicked with his brother Mike and displayed a real gritty game that will fit well for the playoffs. Paul Durning ended his point drought this weekend and also played with real grit and determination in front of the net.

Mike Riggi over the weekend scored 5 goals and in the last three games has a total of 8 goals. Mike has scored a goal in every game this season with the exception of two and has developed into the purest offensive threat on the team. Mike will be counted on during the playoffs to be the teams main finisher.

Believe it or not, a positive part of this weekend was that Brian and Jason struggled. Did they play bad? Absolutely not, but they weren't themselves and yet the Sunny Delight still won. This is good because Sunny Delight didn't have to count on Jason or Brian dominating the game in order to win. It is a good sign that if Brian or Jason struggle in the playoffs, other guys can step up to win.

Even though Brian and Jason weren't themselves, they are still the two best players on the team and in the league. Jason and Brian on their worst games can still be at the top of the league and displayed it this weekend. Both players are the teams MVP's and will really be impressive in the playoffs.

Plenty of positives for the team, but there are negatives leading into the playoffs for Sunny Delight as well.

Dave will finally be returning to the team after his ridiculous four game suspension and will be put back with his line mate Mike Riggi. It is uncertain what kind of shape Dave is in, and how well he will mesh with the team after being gone for about a month.

Also with Dave returning that will unfortunatley force Joe Riggi to move back to defense. Will this weaken the offense for Sunny Delight? And will it possibly weaken the defense as well? Jason and Brian have come accustomed to playing most of the game rotating with Nick so that could be a possible problem.

With Dave and Mike reuniting, the other offensive line will be Paul and Fil. Those two really have to try and find a way to develop some offense on their own. The team will need two scoring lines for the playoffs so it is key that Paul and Fil work out some sort of strategy. The line needs to make clear who is going to finish most of the plays, who is going to carry the puck, who is going to battle in front of the net, who is going to be the primary play maker, and who is going to back check.

While Jenn has played great in the second half of the last two games, the first half has been a problem. Sunny Delight has been able to catch up in the past, but for the team to try and keep coming back from behind will be exhausting especially in the playoffs both mentally and physically. Jenn will have to find a way to duplicate her game in the second half for the first half.

Lots of things for the team to work on, but in all honesty Sunny Delight should be in the finals this year. If not it would be a disappointment.

That's my 2 cents for now, see you in the post-season bitches.

SUNNY DELIGHT HOCKEY - Player Bios

2005 Sunny Delight Player Bios

Paul once again refuses to play goalie this season. Why paul continues to deny his millions of fans the privilege of watching him get hit with little black objects is beyond me. Watching Paul without his pads is like watching Michael Jordan play baseball in the prime of his basketball career, watching The Rock make movies instead of wrestling, and watching Joe Riggi make an accurate pass. It just doesn't seem right. Will Paul ever play goalie again? I recently asked him and he quickly avoided the question with his usual sexual advances. If you look in Paul's closet you will see those pads hanging in dust, along with an Asian midget wearing diapers. Get used to seeing Paul play offense fans, and get used to every one of his team mates..hating him.

Now this is the real bio:

Paul Durning-Offense/Goalie
Assets: Paul is the type of player who is always in the right place at the right time. Finds ways to be involved with almost every goal and quietly tied for the team lead last season in points. He is very versatile and works hard every shift of every game. Has a real high offensive upside.
Flaws: Paul's asset is also his flaw. He is so sneaky and quiet you really don't notice him in the play unless he actually scores the goal. Tends to get pushed around easily and is a liability on defense.
Overall: This season Paul will bring his knack for scoring goals and have plenty of points to show for his hard work.

The minute I found out Joe Riggi was coming back for yet another exciting season of Inline Hockey, it was one of the more darker moments in my life. I thought all the drinking, lack of financial backing and an unhealthy obsession with party poker would finally put the old timer out of the game for good. But no, Joe is back and is more out of shape then ever. Don't underestimate Joseph though. Yes he may be as blind as Ray Charles without his contacts and has the physical build of an undeveloped fetus, but this man can play some hockey. (Espn 2k5 for playstation 2) Bring what's ever left Joe we'll be watching and waiting.. with a stretcher.

Now this is the real bio:

Joseph Riggi-Defense
Assets: Joe is an extremely smart hockey player. Has a wealth of hockey knowledge and is always counted on to do his job. Joe is solid on offense as well as defense, is a good passer and shot blocker. Great instigator and draws plenty of penalties for the team. Plays with plenty of heart and displays a never give up mentality.
Flaws: Joe struggled last season finding his role on the team. He was caught out of position a lot and tried to do more than he could handle. Struggles with physicality in front of the net and along the boards. This season less may mean more for Joe.
Overall: Joe will continue to play hard and solid defense this year.

Mike will be making his Extremes debut this season and to everyone's surprise will be without, for the first time, his cinder block rolling appliances that he called skates. The new hi-low experience is sure to have Mike dipsy doodling all over the rink...most instances probably ending with a high speed splat into the boards. However, Mike's undying love for the game still remains the same....not quite as much as he loves calling 900 numbers and speaking to hermaphrodite midgets at all hours of the night...but his hearts in the right place. He likes to call himself something like "Bibby Fruity Most Impotent Player Tin Boy Oreo" or some crap like that. Mike has the offensive prowess of a fruit bat and the defensive skills of Barbie's best friend Skipper. With contributions like that its a good thing he can make us laugh.

Now this is the real bio:

Michael Riggi-Defense
Assets: Mike is the most responsible defensmen on the team. Always thinks defense first and has great hockey sense. Mike has the size to battle with some of the larger players in the league and a physical edge to help when games get nasty. Has good hands, very creative and is a great passer. Can also chip in offensivley(7 goals last season) and is a vocal leader.
Flaws: Fatigue always gets the best of Mike. Plays dirty on occasions and takes stupid penalties. Has restrictions when it comes to skating. Doesn't excel in high pressured situations.
Overall: Mike will anchor the defense for Blitz this season. He will also pinch in offensively when needed.

Something happened to Brian Costello last year that changed his life forever. It was during a game last season, Brian was skating doing whatever it is that he does and a teammate by the name of Ryan called Brian to the bench. Brian, not understanding why someone even had the audacity to speak his name out loud, skated to the bench and asked what's up. Ryan then, opened the door and skated onto the rink. Brian's jaw dropped as Ryan had taken his time on the rink. Since then Brian has been to therapy countless times and spends most of his days combing his hair and planning revenge. We'll get him Brian..we'll get him.

Now this is the real bio:

Brian Costello-Offense
Assets: Brian really broke out last season as an all around great hockey player. His offensive numbers dipped a little bit dropping to fourth best on the team but he developed a two way game. He is an extremely shifty player and his hard to contain in the offensive zone. Great skating ability with the best stick handling on the team. Has an explosive shot that he can unleash from anywhere on the rink.
Flaws: Even though he has greatly improved on back checking, it's always offense on the mind with Brian. Tends to take very long shifts and over works himself when the team is struggling. Slap shot is very wild.
Overall: Brian will head the offense this season and challenge for the team lead in goals. Has been and still is the best offensive threat on Blitz. Will be counted on for a lot of offensive production.

Dave has the most experience playing in the new Inline Roller Hockey league called the Extremes. He has a significant advantage over the rest of the team and will use his knowledge to show his team mates how to take wild slap shots and never pass back to Mike on the point. Not anyone could do these things, but dave has mastered them and does it often with ease. Dave committed treason when stating his negative opinion of the team name "High Rollers". For this act he will no longer be called Faz the Warrior, but Faz the Communist. Dave has also had problems with steroids in the past by injecting them into his sweat glands. The man sweats A LOT.

Now this is the real bio:

David Fazendiero-Offense
Assets: Dave is a solid offensive player who loves to battle along the boards by using his size efficiently. Has decent hands and can play physical when provoked. Has a very heavy shot and fearless when it comes to blocking shots. Has developed into Blitz best face off man and is great for morale in the locker room.
Flaws: Dave takes long shifts from time to time. Has trouble controlling his slap shot. Is a liability on defense. Dave struggled greatly on offense last year scoring just one goal. Has trouble keeping up with quicker opposing players.
Overall: Dave has to improve from last years disappointing offense output. Will continue to be key in the face off department and will be counted on for offense.

This season Jason will make a significant effort into regaining his spot as team leader. Last season with new team mates Jason was known as "Spanish". For the first time Jay wasn't seen as a ruthless competitor who would do anything to win, he was seen as an immigrant who happened to play hockey. Finding a get rich quick scheme along with his loyal side kick Dave, he yet again missed games last season. Jason of course came back to the team and dominated the games like no other illegal alien could. Jason will hopefully not find another way to get rich, although Willie Wonka and the chocolate factory is holding tryouts for an oompa loompa. Don't go Jay!

Now this is the real bio:

Jason Brito-Offense/Defense
Assets: Jason is the best all around player on Blitz. He has plenty of speed, great skating ability, a physical edge and an unbelievable two way game. Excels best on offense but is more valuable to the team on defense. Had 20 points last season in just 7 games. Has great hockey sense and is a very creative player. Is the emotional leader of Blitz and team captain.
Flaws: Jason can sometimes get carried away with rushing the puck from defense. Jason tends to take stupid penalties when angered and has trouble keeping his emotions in check. Misses games every season.
Overall: Jason will lead Blitz with his great offensive and defensive abilities this season. He will challenge for team lead in points and will be the seam that holds the team together.

Fil came to America with a dream. A dream for freedom, success, and the soccer. Because soccer is played by only 13 people in America, Fil had to settle for hockey. He has made the transition well, although a lot of the team believes Fil thinks he is still playing soccer. Fil has especially takin the skill of skating to an entirely new level. Mastering quick turns, skating backwards, stopping, and plenty of speed, Fil is thinking about starting an instructional video on how to skate. Ok I just made that up. Fil coming out with an intructional video on how to skate is like President Bush starting print on dictionaries.

Now this is the real bio:

Fil Oliveira-Offense
Assets: Phil has great stick handling abilities and is very creative on offense. He's a good passer and has great vision on the rink.
Flaws: Lacks the basic fundementals of hockey especially on defense. Although a good stick handler, he gets carried away from time to time. Skating is a problem for phil and his stamina needs improvment from his time off. Needs to work on his shot to complete his offensive game.
Overall: Phil might need a couple of games to get back into shape but once he does he will provide plenty of offense.

SUNNY DELIGHT HOCKEY - Mike's 2 Cents

Welcome to Mike's 2 Cents

Here you will find Mike's take on the game most recently completed.

Black Ice vs Sunny Delight

Last night's game came down to two things. Black Ice's goalie was not as good as Paul, and Black Ice did not have an answer for Jason Brito. Jason last night played the entire game. He did not take one shift off, and his only breather was during intermission for one minute. Jason for the first time this season took complete control over the entire game. He decided when the offense needed help he would rush the puck, but also realized when to stay on defense. He pretty much dictated every shift of every play for both teams. That balance was what Jason has been lacking but it seems that he really has found a way to be more valuable to the team than ever before.
Sunny Delight played shorthanded again with Fil, Brian, and Jenn missing in action. Sunny Delight welcomes the return of all those players next week, and may have a full team for the first time in what seems like forever. In the 3-0 victory last night, and the past couple of games, there have been five players who have held up the team. Nick, Joe, Mike, Paul, and Dave have played every game this season and have done a great job keeping the flame alive while other team members deal with injuries. Nick last night played his usual solid game and even contributing an assist on Jason's gorgeous deflection goal. Joe again for the second week in a row played great two way hockey and battled along the boards with more aggression than anybody thought possible. Dave scored a goal as well and continued to be an important key to the Sunny Delight offense. Mike Riggi continued to be the only member of Sunny Delight with a goal in every game this season. Mike has really picked up the offensive slack this year and is the most reliable finisher on the team.
Paul really got Sunny Delight out of quite a few jams last night. With only one sub compared to Black Ice's 6 subs, fatigue was the main reason why Paul faced as many shots as he did. It didn't matter though, Paul saved every single shot recording Sunny Delights first shut out of the season. Also very good work by Sunny Delights penality kill towards the end of the game. It saw Joe Riggi hustle like never before and the reunion of Jason and Mike on defense. They killed off the penality perfectly, including huge blocked shots by Joe and Jason, and the shutout was not ruined.
Overall the game was really Sunny Delights most gratifying win. Everybody played hard and everybody played to win. As previously stated Sunny Delight is scheduled to have a full team next week.

That's my two cent$ bitches
Mike

Sunny Delight vs Decepticons

Normally Roller Hockey is a fast tempo type of game where speed dominates and flashy goals consume the score sheet. But Monday night the Sunny Delight and Decepticons game was far from that. The game had more of a blue collar feeling to it, with every goal being scored in the trenches in front of the net for both teams. With Jason Brito out with a knee injury Sunny Delight didn't have a puck rusher or quarterback to anchor the game. Every shift was a battle and this game was by far Sunny Delights hardest fought victory.
Sunny Delight was shorthanded not only with Jason but with Jenn, also missing in action, forcing Paul to put the pads on his legs and the game on his back. With a final score of 5-4 it is hard to believe that the game was a goaltending duel but it really was. Paul played outstanding on Monday and was the crutch that the Sunny Delight defense leaned on all night. It is always great to see Paul play goalie and he came up big for Sunny Delight.
Mondays game also saw the offensive explosion of Mike Riggi. Registering three goals and assisting on both Brian and Joes goals Mike was involved with every Sunny Delight point. With Jason out, Mike took on a leadership role on the team both vocally and physically. Mike continues his goal streak to 5 games. Dave also had a great game, creating plenty of room with his stick handling and offensive rushes. Dave has four goals this season, but that number could easily be 8 or 9. Phil needs some work on his time with the puck but played solid last night as well. Nick still makes me nervous, but played well. Joe Riggi played good two way hockey and picked up his fifth goal of the season.
Brian Costello has made a complete 180 from the player he used to be, to the player everybody sees skating now. Brian used to be a high scoring offensive juggernaut who always had a shoot first mentality. Brian now leads the team in assists and is most responsible defensmen on the team. Brian and Mike have developed awesome chemistry and there has not been a game this season where either player hasn't scored a goal assisted by each other. If Brian wanted to he could probably lead the team in goals, but he understands his role on the team and is more valuable now than ever before.
Great game for Sunny Delight. With the dedication everybody displayed tonight it would have been scary to see the game if Jason had played. With his skill and Paul in net, Sunny Delight would have played the best game of the season. Overall a hard fought victory is exactly what the team needed after the moral killing loss to Costco.

That's my 2 cent$ bitches.
Mike

Costco vs Sunny Delight

The very foundation on which Sunny Delight has been built on is a simple yet very effective strategy. The two best skaters on the team play defense, creating a wall that has dominated every team this season, until last night. In this league nobody passes the puck, meaning 90% of all other team's rushes are going to be one on one. Nobody in the D league can get by Jason or Brian by themselves. The end result is Sunny Delight limiting every team with goal scoring oppurtunies and no team scoring more than 3 goals. Until last night of course. Last night the wall crumbled.
Sunny Delight early in the game was up 4-1 against Costco. There is no reason in the world for a defensmen to be pinching when that is the score. Goaltending was not as strong as usual, so mistakes needed to be few and far between. Last night there were plenty of mistakes, and unlike the other games this team capatilized on those mistakes. The refs didn't help the situation either disallowing two goals and letting the other team slash Sunny D worse then Kunta Kinte in roots.
The biggest problem Sunny Delight has is the lack of a break out play. Nobody knows what to do or where to go. The offense doesn't know whether to come back for the puck, or skate up with the rushing defensmen. The defensmen doesn't know whether to rush the puck up or wait for the offense to come back. Countless times last night there were 3 men rushing the play with only one man back on defense. There should always be two men back especially when there is a lead to protect, and especially when goaltending is a problem.
The line of Phil, Jason, Nick and Paul have to find a way to score goals without Jason rushing the puck up every play. It is a great thing that Jason is involved with every goal, but not when he is expected to carry the line on defense as well. The line is responsible for the most offensive production, but is also responsible for the most defensive collapses during the game. Nobody can get by Jason when he is on defense. There is only one catch to that theory, he has to be on defense. Paul and Phil have to find a way to generate offense without the help of Jason. If not, the wall that once carried the Sunny Delight to a 3-0 record will be a few bricks short.

Thats my 2 cent$ bitches
Mike
