DIY PROJECTS

I love do-it-yourself projects as they offer a challenge as well as being a cost effective alternative to retail.

Other than building the tank enclosure itself, I also constructed an auto-top off system.

Auto Top-Off System

The top-off system is extremely simple yet effective. The components include a Kent float valve which cost $20.00, a 7 gallon garbage can ($4.00), some ice maker tubing and some sprinkler bulkheads all from Home depot.

The hardest part is drilling a hole in the sump to fit the float valve. Luckily the sump is made from acrylic so it installed with relative ease.

The next step was to plum the ice maker tubing from the bottom of the garbage can to the float valve. Once this is accomplished, the garbage can is placed higher than the water level in the sump so that it can be gravity fed.

The system has been running flawlessly since June 22, 2002.
