DAY 9
(Sunday, 05/07/2000)
What a beautiful city! Lucerne
was beautiful, surrounded by Alpine peaks, with the old town district
(where we stayed) across the river Reuss from the newer center.
The old town restricts automobile traffic somewhat, which is just
as well since the streets are narrow and paved with cobblestones.
In addition to modern auto bridges, two footbridges, decorated
with medieval art, give easy access to the old town.

Lucerne is a year-round tourist
destination, though not as large or crowded as Zurich to the north.
Still, Lucerne offers easy access to the Alps and scenic Lake
Lucerne. We only had time for one or the other on this trip, so
we opted to take a boating excursion of Lake Lucerne.
