We spent two nights in Alsace, staying in a small hotel in the village of Ottrott--more on that later. We used Ottrott as our base for some side trips, including a long, wonderful day trip to nearby Strasbourg, the capitol of Alsace.

Architecturally speaking, Strasbourg looked different from any city we had seen so far on this trip. In fact, the German-influenced structures reminded us of buildings we had seen in London and Oxford on an earlier trip to Europe. Like many old cities, canals and a river (the Rhine) run through and around Strasbourg. We spent several hours touring the old city by boat.

Strasbourg has been a center for the arts, sciences and politics in Europe for centuries.
