DAY 6 and 7 (05/03-05/04/00)

Alsace

We drove over the Vosges mountains, passing from the very French region of Lorraine into Alsace--part of France, but very Germanic in atmosphere. Even going through the mountains we detected the difference, as the villages went from having French-sounding names to having German-sounding names.

The farming valleys throughout Alsace and Lorraine were filled with vistas like the photo above, with patchwork fields of green and yellow as far as the eye could see. We found out after we got back to the states that the acres and acres of yellow flowers we saw were mustard--grown as a feed crop for cattle.

Jim couldn't resist doing his "Sound of Music" impersonation!
