Lets face it, a vehicle is not an investment but you will want to trade it in and/or sell it at one point or another.  The better you maintain it, the more value it retains.  Over the years I have found that people will come to me right before they trade their vehicle in and want me to perform miracles on their vehicle that has been neglected for a couple of years.  At that point it costs them anywhere from $175 to $300 and they don't want to spend that kind of money because they're getting rid of it.  The tips below are simple and will help save money with little out of pocket expenses.

Exterior tips:

1.  Hand Washing.  This alone will help prevent environmental contaminants from bonding to the paint's finish.  Use a soap specifically formulated for car washes.  DO NOT use dishwashing detergent because it will strip the wax from your paint finish.

2.  Auto Detailing Clay.  Have this done
at least once a year.  This removes paint overspray, fallout, environmental contaminants.  This is the perfect time to do Step 3.  There are Clay Kits available at your local Wal-Mart or AutoZone.

3.  Waxing.  Have your paint finish waxed
at least twice a year.  This is what protects your vehicles paint finish from the sun, acid rain, etc.

Interior tips:

1.  De-trashing.  This step helps your interior in several ways.  It prevents odors from food and dirty laundry to penetrate in your vehicle's interior.  It also prevents   grease from "fries" to penetrate into the seats or carpet.  These are a couple of examples but there are many more.

2.  Wipe Down Interior.  Use a damp terry cloth towel to wipe down the dash, console, and door trimming.  This will prevent coffee, hard candy, or soda pop to bake onto the interior's surfaces.

3.  Vacuuming.  This will force you to do Step 1.  This helps prevent dirt, grass, and hair from embedding into the fibers of the seats or carpet.  Self-serv car washes charge as low as $.75.
