| MONDAY, NOV. 1: Lighting the Path for Democracy Election Eve Vigil Election Eve Candlelight Vigils Link U.S. and World Community on the Values We Share Join people across the country for Lighting the Path for Democracy, a national Election Eve Candlelight Vigil from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. local time on November 1 the night before the vote. On Election Day, Americans will divide by party to vote and watch returns. Lighting the Path for Democracy will be a nonpartisan opportunity for all Americans to come together with friends and neighbors to show that democracy matters, call for clean elections, and encourage people to vote on November 2. The vigils are a nonpartisan effort of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), an international social justice organization, and are supported by the National Council of Churches and United for Peace & Justice, a coalition with more than 800 affiliate organizations. With offices in 43 cities in the United States and 22 countries of the world, AFSC was a primary force in the 2003 candlelight peace vigils. The Service Committee hopes to replicate those feelings of unity and support on the eve of this years election. Participating cities include: Baltimore, MD; Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA; Pasadena and San Francisco, CA; Syracuse, NY; and Washington, D.C. Participating communities outside the U.S. include: Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Trafalgar Square, London and many others. Those interested in organizing or attending a vigil should visit www.afsc.org/vigil, e-mail [email protected], or call 215-241-7179. The website includes information on sponsoring a vigil and a generic flyer that you can adapt for your community. MONDAY, NOV. 1: Rally with Barack Obama 9-10:15pm, Hotel Allegro, 171 W. TUESDAY, NOV. 2: Reckless Records' BLOW Election Dance Party 5:30pm, Reckless Records, 1532 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago Want to dance? Want to "blow" off election steam? Want to spend (literally) no money and create an environment of miscellaneous abstraction? Then come to our BLOW election dance party free in-store tomorrow November 2nd at 5:30 pm at the 1532 N.Milwaukee store. I don't like using "at" twice in 4 words but I did and have not any idea how to avoid that in that situation. I don't like using "that" two times in three words either for the same reason. Blow are on K records (sometimes) but their newest release "Poor Aim (Love songs)" is on State Rights. Stephen "Mr." Reckless says this about it: "This EP is a laser-focused re-evaluation of THE BLOW's already celebrated vision; her stuttered, minimalist pop-tones, undulating synths, languid bass ambience and longing lyrics delivered in a post-coital hush...as enticing as it is startling." There's a member of the Microphones hanging around too so it's that kind of thing. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 3: Anti-War Candlelight Rally and March Planned for Day After Elections 5pm, Federal Plaza, Chicago Peace Pledge-Chicago and many other Chicago area peace and justice groups are calling for a candlelight rally and march on November 3, 2004, at 5 pm, at the Federal Plaza to protest the ongoing war in Iraq and the occupations of Afghanistan and Palestine. No matter who wins the election, the war and the occupations will continue. The rally and march will bear witness to the death and destruction caused by these illegal government actions and demand that American troops withdraw immediately. The demonstration is part of a national effort in the days following the election to bring the anti-war message back to the forefront. The rally will begin at 5 pm with a candlelight vigil, and will feature speakers from military families who are against the war. The event is sponsored by the November Third Coalition: American Friends Service Committee, Andersonville Neighbors for Peace, Chicago Anarchist Network, Chicago Coalition Against War and Racism, Chicagoans Against War and Injustice, DuPage Coalition Against War, Eighth Day Center for Justice, Historians Against War-Chicago, Logan Square Neighbors for Justice and Peace, National Baricua Human Rights Network, Nicaragua Solidarity Committee, Palestine Solidarity Group, Peace Pledge-Chicago, Prairie Fire Organizing Committee, Southsiders for Peace, Students for Social Justice. Michigan Ave., Chicago On November 4th, at the Intercontinental Hotel, hundreds of the world's top bankers will meet with major CEOs and heads of government agencies to discuss international finance. They're conference is sub- titled "The Pace Quickens." Among the focuses of the first of their two day agenda are the USA PATRIOT Act and how it effects the privacy of bank customers, and the "War of Terror" and how it effects ports. At 3:45pm, the delegates will begin the agenda item entitled "Trade Bank of Iraq & Coalition Provisional Authority Update." Several of the major Western banks that are members of BAFT joined together to form and profit off of the creation of the Trade Bank of Iraq. In solidarity with the Election Week of Resistance, including the election day events, other BAFT actions, and Peace Pledge anti-war protest, we call for all Chicagoans to hit the streets in front of the Intercontinental Hotel by 5:00pm for a rally against the financiers of Empire. On November 2nd, we will have the chance to choose between two pro-war candidates, but on November 4th our city will receive a city from the real policy-makers and profiteers. Banks finance and direct austerity measures enforced by international monetary institutions like the IMF and World Bank, and it is private banks that finance and direct death squads and state militaries in the massacres and repression of civilians from Iraq to Afghanistan, from Palestine to Haiti, from the Philippines to Colombia. Join us to oppose the corporations that run our country and the greed that is destorying the world. To endorse or find out more information, e-mail us at [email protected]. Michigan Ave., Chicago On November 5th, the annual Bankers Association for Finance & Trade conference "The Pace Quickens" will enter its second day, and their agenda focuses on international free trade issues, and how banks and other corporations can invade countries to assert their economic domination. However, it is clear to us that their so-called "free trade" is a code-word for a war on democracy, people, and the planet. Meanwhile, outside we will reclaim common space in "Our World is Not for Sale," a festival of free food, free music, free literature, free clothes, free skills, and freedom. This will be a community that values both cultural and ecological diversity, in which all are truly free to give, receive, and create on their own terms, in which people can fulfill their needs by working together, in the midst Chicago's most concentrated area of consumerism known as the Magnificant Mile! This is a call to all of you who support our movements and mobilizations from the bottom-up and the inside-out: Food Not Bombs, medics and care-givers, legal teams, independent media, living collectives, direct-democracy organizers, alternative energy and transportation visionaries, and affinity groups, families, individuals and organizations who are working towards solidarity and community-based alternatives. Our World is Not for Sale will only be as great as you make it. We will provide the framework; you supply the material. Skill-shares, free-schools and planned discussions are great ways to get involved. Instead of just perusing goods, we can spend the day together eating free food, making patches, repairing bikes, learning how to silk-screen, discussing theory, learning languages, sewing clothes, painting banners, cutting hair, smashing piatas, and dreaming up even more things to throw together! The only stipulation is that there is no buying, selling, or promoting involvedin this market, everything is strictly free! If you have a skill to share, stuff to give away, or a topic to discuss, plan on bringing your own table or blanket and coming and going as you please, and if you want contact us so we can put your session on a list of events, discussions, skill-shares, and free-schools, just e-mail [email protected] Endorsers: Chicagoland Anarchist Network, Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism, Education Not Empire Student Network, Pilsen & DePaul Food Not Bombs, Students for Social Justice, DePaul Students Against the War, Midwest Unrest, La Voz de Los de Abajo, Nicaragua Solidarity Committee http://www.chicagonewyork.net/dontjustvote http://www.beyondvoting.org SUNDAY, NOV. 14: Asian American Memorial Tribute to Senator Paul Simon 11am-1pm, Claudia Cassidy Theater, Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E.
