The main size was originally a pre-WWI design, for use with Pack Mules. This is why most types are in numbered pairs, for balance on the mule. Also, there are a pair of fixing chains attached to the back panel, which also slopes backwards to assist in fitting onto a Pack Saddle.
These chains were not, as is sometimes stated by others, for fitting to parachutes!!
