HIGH STREET

High Street
High Street: home to Magdalen College, the Botanical Gardens, Teddy Hall, and tons of shops and restaurants. This picture was taken near the intersection of Catte and High Street, looking towards Cornmarket. The building on the opposite side of the street is Examination Schools, where students go for lectures or for examinations.

If you continue down High Street, also called the High, past Cornmarket, you would eventually get to Carfax Tower. The Tower used to be the center of Oxford, and it offers extraordinary views of Oxford. While you're at that end of High Street, stop into the Gap, Principles, Next, and the Mall. There's no such thing as too much shopping!

If you turn around and go the other way down High Street, you'll pass all sorts of good stuff, so walk slowly. There's Harvey's, one of the best sandwich shops in Oxford, the Queensway Coffee Shop which serves up the best mug of hot cocoa on the High, Oxford Hollographics which is pricey but oh so fun, Merton College where Thomas Bodley, T. S. Elliot and Kris Kristoferson studied (not at the same time, of course), a little road that takes you to the Philosophy Library (a slightly scary place... I spent too much time there, so let's just move on, OK?), Magdalen College which has one of the most famous choirs - stop in on a Sunday evening for the inspiration of Evensong, the Botanic Gardens which are so romantic in the springtime, and Christ Church meadow which is lovely all year round but especially at sunset. And if you keep walking down High Street, you'll walk right out of Oxford!

While looking at the picture on the left, you may have asked yourself, "what is that man doing on that bicycle?" Bicycles are very popular in Oxford. They're convenient, cheap, and they get you there a lot faster than walking will. This man is riding a tour bicycle. Some tourists prefer to see Oxford by bicycle, and will pay to have some poor student whisk them around town and tell stores about the buildings.

But now let's head back to Cornmarket. I hear there's a Regatta going on today.
