OXFORD REGATTAS

The Michaelmas Regatta
As we turn left at Carfax Tower, you'll notice that Cornmarket turns into St. Aldate's at Carfax Tower. St. Aldate's is always crowded with buses and cars and bicycles. On the right is Christ Church College, one of the most famous colleges in all of Oxford. It's also one of the most beautiful. Christ Church is home to Oxford's cathedral, which is actually the smallest cathedral in England. Tom Tower, a clocktower designed by Sir Christopher Wren is also at Christ Church. The bell in the clock tolls 101 times at exactly 9:05 every night.

To make things even more confusing, St. Aldate's turns into Abingdon Road just by the bridge, but it's OK, because we want to turn here. The Regattas are held on the Thames River just outside of Christ Church Meadows. At the end of every term, colleges compete against each other for Head Of the River, and students from all of the colleges come out to support their school.

The Michaelmas Regatta
I took the above photos during the 1996 Michaelmas Regattas. The bottom photograph is of St. Catherine's College Women's Team, who won their race. Some of my friends rowed in that boat, so it was a fun day for all.

You can continue up the river and cross through Christ Church Meadows. You'll see some of the most beautiful views of Oxford's skyline. There are paths through the meadows that will eventually take you past Merton College and end up out on High Street.

Now let's head back up towards Cornmarket and explore the Oxford Union and the other end of town. Watch out for the mud.
