Children's Parade
Camp Ben McCulloch holds a Children of the Confederacy Parade every year. The children (and parents) wake up early and decorate their bikes, scooters, golf carts, and Power Wheels in Confederate items, such as pinwheels, streamers, license plates [such as the one on Leslie's bike], and bandannas. There are flag bearers (usually a few of the older boys, but this year, girls had the honor) that head the Parade and lead the children from the Tabernacle, around the camp grounds, and then back to the Tabernacle where a meeting is held to inform any who wish to stay about what the local chapter has done, will do, & how to become a member. I was not a participant this year (I lucked out because Leslie's dad walked the whole way with her), and instead spent my time taking photos.
Before the parade began, I took a quick picture of Leslie & Ryan with their bikes all decorated up. The Tabernacle can be seen in the background, to the left, which is the where the meetings are held every year.
As you can tell, some of us have a lot of pride, and a wonderful sense of humor, when it comes to the Confederacy. Wanda owns a store that caters to those in search of Confederate items, such as bumper stickers, hats, flags, and hat pins. For the 2002 Parade, she was quite an eyeful and one of the most popular present at the Tabernacle and in the parade.
Here we see the front of the parade; the flag bearers were not in step with one another the entire time, which was disappointing because no really good photos could be taken of them.
Our center of attention falls on Leslie, who is riding her bike behind and beside a couple of golf carts. As you can tell, some people really get into the whole spirit of things; we don't as much as some of these people do.
Leslie caught me taking a picture of her, but I still got a genuine smile out of her. The parade is crossing the reenactment grounds, which looks like the Confederate battle flag if you see an aerial shot of it or walk the road.
