Robocop: A Silent Cry

Chapter 2

Lisa was sitting on top of a desk in Murphy's chamber, her arms stretched back as she tilted her upper-body back in thought. Murphy, himself, went back to taking residence in his chair.

They'd both been briefed on what little WAS known about their new case, yet there were still so many questions to be answered that homicide had enlisted the services of Detective Madigan to investigate, and she was glad to have a case to work on, weird as this one sounded. Where to begin.

"So some head of an OPC company is mysteriously murdered," Still looking at the ceiling she thought out-loud, "and there IS a witness, but he's a known felon, and liar, who seems to enjoy taking advantage of anyone, ESPECIALLY the police."

Murphy nodded, "His police-record shows multiple-counts of murder," he paused for a moment, "two of them police-officers, one in Chicago, and another at Metro West."

There was an awkward silence as Madigan glanced to him out of the corner of her eye, then chose her next words, carefully. "People like that, well, they shouldn't be out on the street. Why's this guy?"

"He has contacts."

That's all he needed to say. OCP, they give the force money and protect themselves by "covering" for their mobsters. There HAS to be something wrong with this picture. She rolled here eyes and then sat a bit more upright, as she crossed her arms in thought. "Well, in that case, why would he come forward as a witness?" Robocop looked like he was going to say something, and Lisa held up a hand. "Wait. How do we know he didn't do it himself?"

"Mr. Frank appears to have nothing to gain"

"But that's what the detectives said of his previous cases before. No, there's always some reason to why he rats on someone," she turned to look at Murphy, "and we're just the ones to figure that out. He filed his report and then immediately left the precinct, how about we go pay him a visit and question him to see if his testimony matches what he wrote before. It's awfully far-fetched if you ask me," Lisa grabbed her coat and then opened the gate to walk-out. She saw her body-armor, looked at it questioningly for a second, and then decided, out-loud, "Nah, I don't think I need that just for questioning a witness," and then meant to continue-on when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"No. I heard someone say that once before," she turned to look at him and looked, as best she could, into his eyes. "You're better off preparing for the worst. Things happen," he concluded simply.

Lisa knew, immediately, what he was referring to. Before she had even come to "know" Robocop, or Murphy, the police dealings with OCP, especially around the time of the first "Delta City" hope, had become quite a bit of history and legend. Robocop had always been that way, a celebrity of sorts if a cop ever was. There were toys, action-figures, models, all of which she had glanced at while off-duty, shopping for her nephew. Nothing like that had ever been done before. Sure, there were robots, enforcement droids, but it seemed as though there was something different about him, and everybody knew that, but not quite. So when she was transferred to Metro South, she had been curious to say the least, and had done her best to find out all she could about Robocop. Just small-talking with fellow officers, lightly brining the subject up, researching files on him. Things like that had made her come about the information that not only was he Alex J. Murphy, but he remembered. He remembered. And she had also found out about Anne Lewis's death, not by the original OCP reports, but by witnessing, first-hand, not only some of Murphy's "evidence," but also his dreams. The first one she had seen, the first dream of his she had EVER seen, she had come upon by accident while some tests were being run on him. She saw his wife, his son, and then someone she half-recognized from photos and such.

Anne Lewis, shot off-duty by the Rehab team. She'd heard all sides of what happened, but what she saw, was so clear, so pure, that she wondered how it could have ever been denied. It was then, at that exact moment, that she REALLY began to comprehend what he was going through. She'd known his identity before that of course, but that's when it hit her, so hard, what he must be going through. She'd seen how those 3 bullets had taken her down, and wondered why she was bleeding, Anne had been wearing her vest hadn't she? Then she had seen, in Murphy's restless dreams, when Anne had been offered her vest, and had refused because she was off-duty. Lisa knew that he must feel somewhat responsible, and hoped that he knew that it wasn't his fault that in his concern he hadn't FORCED her to put it on, it was Anne's conscious decision, and neither could have ever known what they'd be getting into.

He showed so little emotion, and often met any "deep" questions with complete and utter silence, so Lisa couldn't help but be a bit honored of his concern for her, and a bit saddened by the facts of life, that not everyone who left the relative safety of the precinct, or their homes, would ever return.

In silence, she nodded and said, "Thanks partner," the only thing she COULD say as she walked over to put her armor on, knowing what the price could be for laziness and lack of foresight.

Murphy looked on, past her, through the tiny window that bordered his world, as he thought of things he often wished he hadn't. But what could he do?

In a few minutes they'd be on their way to another house, on another case, tracking another cop-killer, but then again, at least he could.

In Progress...
