Well, I really like writing, as you might know, among other things, and I've been wanting to try my hand at some Fan Fiction/Fantasy writing. So what follows is, and promises to be a great new Robocop Story to get you through those long periods of RWS (Robocop Withdraw Syndrome). It's just begun, so please, mail me with your opinions. And if you've been following any of the Myths stories I'm involved in, you might be surprised to see an interesting way in which a certain "person" makes her way into this story... *grin* You're gonna LOVE this...
Chapter 1
TIME: THE NEAR FUTURE
PLACE: DETROIT, MICHIGAN
It was an average day in Metro South, but then, what days weren't average? The city was bustling with activity, some wanted, and some not as the criminals here never really took a day off.
Outside, it was fall, and the leaves had already fallen from the few trees that remained in the city. Lisa Madigan looked outside through the small window in the back-most chamber of the precinct, her thoughts on the way things were. Heh, I wonder when OCP will ever realize the importance of little things like that. Imagine. Trees, the things that allow us to breath, destroyed all the while we think we are making the world a better place. She shook her head sadly. But then, how can we EVER expect anything better from a company with no care for humanity itself The last thought had been brought on by the synchronized, mechanical beeping behind her, where Murphy was sitting, recharging, in his spare moments off-duty.
Who would have ever thought, a few years ago, that I'd be here, today. She watched as a police-car passed by, lights flashing and siren blaring as it raced by. Well, the police and detective bit is not surprise, I suspect my parents never doubted for a moment what I'd be after all that eagerness for danger, and helping people. A faint smile crossed her lips. They had thought there was a doctor in me, imagine, ME doing surgery? Detroit is FAR better-off as is. She nodded. Yeah, this is what I wanted. Setting some of the world's wrongs right, and all the while, doing it with sty-- She stopped in mid-thought as she paused to remember where she was.
Behind her, Murphy stirred, and unintentionally, Lisa closed her eyes, thinking of what someone else had gotten as an "award" for being a fine police-officer. She'd often wondered what he had been like before all this had happened to him, and how much of what he was, was still in there now
"Good morning Detective Madigan," the reverberating voice behind her stated simply.
She turned around, putting on a bit of a smile, trying to hide her deeper thoughts. It was weird like that, for it had been she, herself, who had, at long last, figured-out Robocop's REAL identity, and though she was likely his closest friend, she was always quite uncomfortable asking him any DEEP questions, knowing that it was his business alone. It must have been horrible for him, no, more than horrible, first "loosing" his wife, son, and family, and then his partner, Lewis, and then Lazarus had to leaveHe's stuck like this, with all these problems boiling inside of him, and no-one to talk to besides me. She sighed inwardly. I wish he'd let on what he's thinking more. I always end-up hanging on his every word, like it's a clue to the full-picture, and I think he knows that. Must be the detective in me, always trying to figure stuff out, when I have to stop and wonder if it SHOULD be figured-out at all.
"So," she said, initiating small-talk mode, "Did you sleep okay."
"My system efficiency is 91.2%."
"That's not exactly what I meant, but okay, I'm glad to hear it." She often found herself wondering who was speaking to her. Was it a robot who was trying to deal with some old memories, or a man who was trying to overcome the robot. It was times like these when it was hard to tell. She would have thought the man would have answered, "fine," or something of the such, but then again, she couldn't be called an expert in the least, ad if SHE was in his position, what would she have answered? Some light chatter, or a programmed-comment to cover-up the pain? So many questions, and I have to ask myself if by acting like this, I'm making whatever worse But when she looked at him, REALLY looked at him, she knew the answer was clear. As much as he seemed to deny it, he needed a friend, someone to talk to. She didn't know how much he'd ever open up, but she knew that he must find it comforting for her to be there, even if he didn't often show it
"Well, you must be wondering why I'm here so early"
"No, the Sargent already informed me about our new case," Robocop answered to the uninvited question.
Lisa threw up her hands, rolling her eyes just a bit, "Fine, have HIM take all the fun out of me telling you all about it. You know, _I_ am supposed to be the detective around here!.."
"It is unlikely that anyone in the precinct doubts that."
She glared back at Robocop, her mouth pursed in a warm scowl, "Hey there buddy! You know as well as anyone that they still have yet to see me REALLY show 'em up, I'm just getting warmed-up for the PERFECT moment." Lisa grinned at him, knowing that it was good to see that he still had a sense of humor, even if many would never see it.
She continued, "So you're telling me that the Sarge already told you about the murder."
"Affirmative."
She began counting on her fingers to emphasize her points, "The witness, the reliability of the witness, the unusual circumstances surrounding this guy's death, and"
"Yes Detective Madigan."
"Fine fine, what am I here for anyways? It seems as though I'm always the last-informed," she grumbled.
"You were off-duty," he stated simply.
"Yeah, I guess that's an acceptable reason," she conceded, yawning, "Yesterday was a LOOONG day, and I might have been the slightest bit grumpy to get a call at 2 o'clock in the morning from homicide informing me that some person had been murdered."
Murphy looked at her, after a moment of thought, said, "I would not have volunteered to make that call."
She smiled at him, "Yeah? You and everybody else in the precinct would have ended-up drawing straws for that privilege aye?"
"I would not have been in the vicinity."
"I can see the headlines now, "Brave and Daring Robocop suddenly disappears when the prospect of awakening his partner from a good night's sleep is announced"
"Today would not have been a good day."
"Yeah, * yawn * for you, me, and everybody else buddy. So fine, now I forgive you, and Sarge, let's get to work.
