Scene 3.1
After midnight.
Angel's apartment. Although its night the blinds are down. The only light comes from a candle, which sits on the table beside his bed. Angel restlessly paces back and forth the room. Mentioning the Messengers brought up painful memories - less because of their earlier encounter, but a coincidence of a completely different kind.
Angel (aloud to himself):
Catherin!
(his mind produces the picture of an 16-year-old girl with brown hair, dressed in an outmoded lace dress - he sees her, how she looks up to a tall brown-haired man, who lovingly returns her look)
Angel:
I'm so sorry.
(He sees Angelus bending over the brown-haired man, fangs buried deeply into his throat - he almost physically feels the accusing look of the girl and so does Angelus he lets go off his victim and drops his lifeless body to the ground - Angelus finally faces the girl meets her eyes with an evil, malicious smile)
Monster! Monster! Monster! (it is echoing inside his head)
Angel (fights his memories):
No, I never intended...
(a key is turned in the lock - somebody enters his apartment)
Buffy:
Angel?
Murderer! Murderer! Murderer! (the voice doesn't want to disappear)
Angel (groaning):
I am sorry - I'm so terribly sorry!!!
(Buffy feels his agony and forgets that she's actually angry at him - she runs to him and pulls him into her arms)
Angel (awakening from his nightmare):
Buffy! (he clings to her, as though his life was depending on their embrace)
Buffy(anxiously):
What is it sweetheart? (she touches him, kisses him, tries everything to take away his pain)
Angel:
It is all right, as long as you're with me. (he quivers and clings to her even harder)
Buffy:
Why don't you to tell me, what...
Angel (his eyes become glassy):
This girl... Catherin... it's all that long ago... (his voice breaks away)
Buffy (torn between jealousy and sympathy):
You were in love her?
Angel (irritates)
No, what makes you think I was?
Buffy (now even more confuses):
No? That's great - eh, who was she?
Angel:
The Messenger...
(all of a sudden Buffy is wide awake)
Buffy:
The Messenger???
Angel:
His mortal cover - the body, he chose while in this world.
Buffy (increasingly confused):
And you've killed him?
Angel (frankly surprises):
No! Even if I wanted, I couldn't...
(his eyes meet Buffy and he recognizes her not to have a glimmer of what he is talking about)
Angel (quoting):
Only he, who does not know about his identity, will be in the position to destroyed him.
Buffy:
And you knew...
Angel:
One touch and I would have burnt alive - it's like facing concentrated light...
Buffy (alarmed):
She???
Angel:
Catherin! (he notices, that he won't get round an explanation this time)
Angel:
Let's go for a walk.
(he puts his arm around her shoulder, and together they leave the house)
Scene 3.2
After midnight.
Several vampires approach the cell. Visibly disappoints they realize the stalemate-situation .
Vampire 1:
Didn't you like the aperitif?
(with an evil grin on his face he points at the girl)
Spike:
You just wouldn't toss off a Chardonnet, my ignorant friend... (he/it kneels beside the girl breathing in the odor of her blood)... first you smell its fragrance!
Vampire 2 (provocative):
Not even a tiny little sip?
(Spike loses the control over his facial expression - eagerly he sniffs at her throat - the nasty laughter of the removing vampires, is echoing from the walls)
Spike (to himself):
Those idiots are right. (he stares at her) I should kill you...
(all of a sudden she touches his hand - for one moment he looses himself in her eyes - once more he is face to face with the girl dressed in past century's style - harshly he tears himself loose)
Spike:
Damn it, you're driving me nuts!!! (he rattles at the bars)
Scene 3.3
A gigantic cave below ground. Many vampires have gathered around an all black figure.
Black figure:
Progressed?
Vampire 1:
No, he hasn't yet touched her.
Black figure:
How is that possible, for three days... (he hesitates and quickly corrects himself)... for more than three days he hasn't fed...
Vampire 2 (cuts him off):
Don't you worry, Healer. (with a gloating laugh) sooner or later, he'll kill her for you.
Vampire 1 (adding):
...for he would die, and if he didn't... (he joins the other's nasty laughter) ...he'd...
(for one second the camera shows Spike, who is violently shaking the bars)
vampire 1:
...surely loose his mind!!!
(the walls reflect the vampires' rumbling laughter)
