The Benedix Family in Bohemia

Jan Benedix, son of Vilhelm Benedix and Mariana Kanda, immigrated from Pisek, Bohemia to Chicago, IL in 1878. In 1880 Jan (or John) married Marie Herman, also from Bohemia. They had 3 children, of which only Frank John (born October 1, 1883) survived past infancy. Marie apparantly died in childbirth and in 1885 Jan married Marie Jelinek. They had 3 children, Eleonora (Lena), William Anton, and a girl who died in infancy.

Jan's father was Vilim (Vilhelm) Benedix, who was born approximately 1794. He was a dealer in hardware (ironmonger) at Pisek. He was a baptised Jew, apparantly baptised at the time of his marriage to Marie. His father was Lewi Benedix, who worked in Velko Klokava in Silesia, as well as Hostice, Cirnava, and Hluboka in Southern Bohemia. His mother was Teresie Liebermann from Dobris in Southern Bohemia.

Jan's mother was Marie (Mariana) Kandova, baptised (and probably born) 2 Aug 1802 in Pasek (Paseky) in Southern Bohemia. Her father was Josef Kanda, a weaver. Her mother was Anyzka (Anna) Veverkova, daughter of Tomas Veverek, a farm laborer.

Jan's parents, Vilim and Marie, were apparently married in 1832. They had 4 children, Eleonora, Vaclav Vilhelm, Johanna Anezka, and Jan. Marie died September 13, 1847. On January 22, 1855 Vilim married Anna Casenska, daughter of Frantisek Casensky and Lidmila Slavicek, both from Malcise. Vilim died September 16, 1865.
