| The amount of undergraduate talent at WR that will likely declare for the draft give the Raiders the option of selecting a solid WR in either the 1st or 2nd round of April's Draft. Despite Jerry Rice's strong play and likely return for one last year in 2003, a drafted WR would compete for Marcus Knight for the # 4 WR spot on the Raiders roster. The loser would still make the team and be bumped up once Rice retires. We would also be more likely to finally cut James Jett and replace him with a better receiver and special teams player. Depending on what the Raiders want to do with Tyrone Wheatley next season, picking a top 3 running back with one of the two 1st round picks will also be tempting. Replacing Wheatley with a cheaper, better all-around RB next season will save Oakland cap space and allow them to groom a RB for the future if/when Charlie Garner pursues a bigger paycheck elsewhere or starts showing age. According to insiders, however, unless a gem drops to them, the Raiders will use both of their 1st round picks on defense. Look for a defensive end and an outside linebacker or defensive tackle to be their 1st round picks. |
