of Detroit and Windsor

Here we are at the
Peace Rally
in Windsor Ontario
on Sunday,
November 17th.
It was a cold day, but we would not be put off by it. We were there, raging against war. We were featured prominently in the march & rally in Windsor Sunday. We started the march off, we sang at the rally, twice. The other demonstrators welcomed us, singing along, smiling at our lyrics, & clapping. At the end of the rally, on our last song, some young women from the middle east joined us in song, I found this very moving. I hope to have a picture of that soon.  We sang Battle Hymn of The People , Doo Dah, Ta Ra Ra Boom, and Georgie Porgie. I feel very good about our how our gaggle is growing, in numbers and in purpose.
We will post more pictures and reports soon.
Thanks for visiting,
Kathy

Here we are performing at a fundraiser for CPR,
the Committee for the Political Resurrection of Detroit.
The event was held at the Detroit International Institute on Sunday November 24th.
The audience loved us :)
A Busy Weekend !!!

We raged Saturday And Sunday, December 7th & 8th, 2002.. Sorry, no pictures this time.

Saturday we went out on the streets of Detroit, in the cultural center area on Noel Night. We started out on the lawn of the International Institute, sang on over to Woodward Avenue and went to the Detroit Main Library to warm up. A nice security guard gave us the OK to sing inside, we found a perfect spot on a staircase balcony overlooking the main hall. Wonderful acoustics in those marble halls
:). We alternated between holiday carols and Anti-war songs. There was a great turnout, some of our eager beavers were there, a woman from Traverse City who joined us said she plans to start a group there.  We also had 2 new members join us, Wendy & Peggy. The people who heard us singing were sometimes surprised, often amused, a few walked away. Our picture was taken a couple of times.

Sunday was a completely different event. We were invited to sing at a club in Detroit, The Magic Stick. They were hosting a fundraiser for Peace, and we sang during the band intermission. ON STAGE, with real microphones. I feel silly saying it, but I never expected to do anything like that. It was fun, the audience really liked the lyrics, & seemed to appreciate us too. We gained 2 new members in the lobby before rehearsal, Pam and Margaret, and one more after the performance, Karen.

We are growing by leaps and bounds, there are currently 33 names on our member list.
Another full weekend, events on both Saturday December 21st and Sunday the 22nd.

Saturday we sang at an outdoor anti-war demonstration in Detroit in front of a military recruiting center in a small shopping center . We joined a group of young activists who arranged the demonstration. They  served hot food, MMMM, we needed that
:~) and put up a sign "FOOD NOT BOMBS". It was COLD and windy, but we were prepared for it with layers of clothing, hats scarfs, shawls and gloves. Afterwards a couple of us went to a nearby restaurant to warm up and made friends with the waitress Deshunda who might join up with us.

Sunday we did our first protest where we were not welcome. We protested at a J.C. Penney's Mall entrance against their truly horrendous war toys.
VIEW EXAMPLES HERE
We managed to sing for nearly an hour before the mall security guards insisted that we leave. Since we were all pretty cold by then, we agreed to quit for the day. We passed out about 150 flyers while we sang.

Our Flyers said
Please DO NOT buy war toys for your children. To create PEACE ON EARTH we need to teach our children that war, killing, violence, and destruction are NOT acceptable or inevitable. Instead buy books, musical instruments, building blocks, stuffed animals, dolls, non-violent games, and board games the whole family can play. Happy Holidays from the Raging Grannies Without Borders (of Detroit and Windsor)

Brrrrrrr..............

Both days were cold ones !
Here we are making friends with our waitress after the military recruiting office demonstration. .
REPORT FROM D.C.  January 18th 2003 Anti-War Rally & March

There were 21 of us grannies singing together in D.C. We had 8 from Michigan, and we met up with 13 grannies from Rochester N.Y. It feels GREAT to be part of a group doing something about this planned preemptive war. We had fun & made a contribution at the same time. I sang with the Rochester gaggle in the October 26th demonstration, & that's where I met my grannie partner, Patricia. So we are all getting to be old friends fast. The D.C. event was astounding, huge, & exhilirating :). SOOO MANY PEOPLE ! Every way I looked I saw masses of people, as far as I could see. There was no way for me to see how big it was, cause it was so big! I find it all the more amazing that there was such a turnout in the cold weather. It never got above 24 degrees Saturday. Just IMAGINE how many would have turned out if the weather was warmer. And that was one of the many signs I saw, a single word, "IMAGINE".
Another sign, sorry I forget the exact wording, but something along the line of
"IF BROCCOLI WAS IRAQ'S MAIN EXPORT, WE WOULD NOT BE /bombing thEM.
Now the media is finally picking up on the movement, they were a little slow, but now they are acknowledging what the Anti-war protesters are saying.
NO WAR ON IRAQ
