WHAT
YOU CAN DO TO HELP?
* If you are lucky enough to live
in close proximity to wild koala populations, it is important to remember that
you are sharing the koalas’ territory and that you can easily threaten their
survival without meaning to. There are some simple ways you can reduce the
danger to the koalas:
- Keep your dogs tied up,
preferably inside, at night. Dogs kill koalas and there is no such thing as
a koala-friendly dog. Dogs kill hundreds of koalas each year and even if
your dog is within your property boundary, it may still kill a koala. This
is not the dog’s fault but it is your responsibility if you live in a
koala area.
- When you are driving, be aware of
wildlife crossing the roads. Many koalas are killed on the roads and they
don’t stand much of a chance when hit by a motor vehicle.
- If you have a swimming pool, it can
become a trap for koalas, not because they can’t swim, but because they
can’t get out. Keep a stout rope (50 mm diameter) dangling in the pool
that will help a koala get out of the pool.
- Be vigilant in your local area. When a
development is planned in koala habitat, voice your concerns to your local,
state and federal politicians.
- Support
community koala groups in your area.
