Little did fans who cut their teeth on racing at 63rd and Shirley know how unique the Ak-Sar-Ben paddock was. In the grand old tracks final days the parade path, the dog-leg 7f chute and the traditional Free Parking were some claims to fame.
The paddock now stands empty, surrounded by weeds. Plenty of grass has taken root, but this is not the Turf Course once planned for Aks. Note the "progress" construction in the background. (These two photos, June 2003, R. Wentworth)
Visit Eastern Nebraska's Horseman's Park for full card simulcasting from across the country. Take a look at the new racing strip on the Horsemen's Park page.

Omaha's  memorial plaque keeps watch on the now deserted owner's parking lot across from the Ak-Sar-Ben paddock. This small island from the past has as of June, 2003  not been desecrated.
