Digital Content Commerce (D-commerce)

D- commerce (Digital Content Commerce) is the management of transactions & workflow of digital content on the Internet that is integral to enabling commerce. One of the most common examples of d-commerce is the buying & delivery of goods such as books, music & movies on the Internet. The right holders in publishing, entertainment (music & movies) & financial sector are the hot markets for d-commerce.

The key difference between e-commerce & d-commerce is that in e-commerce, only the commerce is done over the net everything else remaining the same. In case of d-commerce, the entire process is digital. The book is produced using digital workflow, distributed in electronic form & consumed on a variety of devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, desktop computers etc.

In case of buying/selling of books on the internet, all copyrights, contracts, permission are stored on the server. Instead of traditional manufacturing process, books are stored digitally. The consumer can select the book & instead of waiting for the book to be delivered physically, he/she can download the book on his/her machine & read it. The consumer need not buy the book. The consumer has the option of buying only that part of the book, which they desire.

D-commerce can be very effective for the publishing sector (magazines, research papers, newsletters, journals), entertainment areas (music/movies).

Presently there are many companies providing piecemeal solution in d-commerce areas namely content production, right enforcement, print on demand, workflow management etc.
