Ranchers:

John Simpson Chisum -- Richard Becker
John Chisum was born in Tennessee in 1824. He and his parents moved to Texas in 1837 not long after it was declared an independent republic and were the earliest settlers of Paris, Texas. In Texas he became fairly wealthy and influential holding public office in Lamar County, Texas, owned several small stores, owned a ranch, and managed several other herds for neighbors and partners. As the New Mexico and Colorado territories opened up and the US government had the need of cattle to feed the Indians settled on reservations in those territories and the soldiers to guard the Indians, Chisum was among the first to drive herds of cattle into those areas for sale to the army. In 1867, he was the first to drive cattle to southern New Mexico into what would become Lincoln County. He started a ranch on the Pecos River there and over the next few years completely moved his operations from Texas to New Mexico. In 1875 he has just bought another ranch with several natural springs (a very valuable resource) to serve as his headquarters. He controls a heard of 80 to 100 THOUSAND head of cattle, by far the largest in the area. More than one small cattle rancher has made a living off Chisum "strays".

Lawrence G. Murphy -- Michael Reed
Lawrence G. Murphy was born in County Wexford, Ireland in 1834. He emigrated to the US as a young man because of the potato famine where he quickly enlisted with the US Army. He reenlisted a couple of times eventually ending up in the New Mexico territory. When the Civil War broke out he joined the First New Mexico Volunteers formed when the Texas Confederates invaded the New Mexico territory. During that time he served as quartermaster for Kit Carson eventually rising to the rank of Major. In 1866 the regiment was disbanded and Major Murphy was honorably discharged at Fort Stanton. There he went into business as a post trader beginning his mercantile career. A few years later he hired his current partner Jimmie Dolan as a clerk. In 1873, LG Murphy & Co. were evicted from Fort Stanton when Dolan allegedly threatened the base commander during an argument. Following this they moved operations to Lincoln, where they had already been buying and selling land, and build "the House" an overly large building combining as a store, dwelling, and meeting hall.

Elijah "Eli" Lowell -- Ray Lavoie
Lowell, is an odd duck, but respected by normal folks. He is feared by ne'er do wells. Lowell reads an awful lot and is always trying new fangled ways of farming and ranching. Some work, some don't. He sometimes drives to the nearest rail head to pick up mail order farming equipment and supplies. Lowell seems to have more money than his operation would generate. He is from Boston, supposedly from an upper class family. He served in the War, as an officer of an all black unit. His long time ranch hands are all soldiers from his unit and their families. Lowell is firmly independent in the Chisum v. Murphy dispute, and stays out of county power struggles. He intervenes only if one of the powerful bothers him or his friends. Lowell is not the toughest brawler or best shootist in town, but he is formidable in both respects. Neighbors often go to him with problems and he is quick to help them as best he can. He has never been seen to lose his temper.

Matt Fletcher -- Bret Shefter
Fletcher's ranch borders Chisum's on the north and the two of them are friends as well as neighbors. He seems to be content running a small ranch. He generally keeps to himself. It's clear he has no love for L.G. Murphy & Co. Considered to be a good shot, wins shooting contests at local fairs.

Elizabeth Cameron -- Rachel Heslin
Elizabeth moved to Lincoln as a child with her father and grew up there. She helped Old Man Cameron run the ranch. She's a great horseback rider. After her father was killed in a cattle stampede, she was terribly upset, and the fact that the sheriff didn't agree with her that foul play was involved didn't help. She has taken over the ranch and seems to be running it smoothly.

Lily McCulloch -- Deborah Levine
Tough as nails lady, with sun worn skin and indeterminate age. No younger than middle aged, though. Has lived near for as long as the area was opened to settlement, her husband having died almost immediately after they arrived. Her horse stock is in high demand and she has a reputation as a good trainer. Some say she has learned tricks from somewhere (Indians? Mexicans?) that let her control her animals in ways no other trainers can. Most of her animals go to far off rich folks or more local cavalry officers at Forts Stanton and Sumner. She mostly keeps to herself and is not too friendly a neighbor. It is known that a man once can to the Broken W to rape her and steal some horses. His bleached skull still sits outside the ranch house next to the long horns. No one much comes to the house for tea anymore, and no one bothers her either. Rumors about her float - she has a pot of gold buried on her property, she can drink any man under the table, and so on. No proof on these, but she does seem to have a good bit of wealth, and when she drinks (quite unladylike), she holds her liquor really well.

Emily Ragsdale -- Deborah Schallau
Emily Ragsdale was the second (and last) wife of the late Silas Ragsdale, a wealthy ranch-owner. She was just a teenager when she married the much older man, but she has grown to be pillar of the community, a leader in her church, and since her husband died, a shrewd businesswoman. The only black mark in what would be a shining future for her is that her late husband's grown son (from a previous marriage), Silas (Cy) Ragsdale Jr, has challenged Emily's right to inherit the Ragsdale estate.

Cowboys

William "Billy" Morton -- Ian Fagan
Billy helped establish the town of Lincoln when he worked for Chisum driving the first cattle here from Texas in 1867. Much to everyone's surprise he went off to fight against the Indians. He left a boy and came back a man, a bitter man, a changed man, a man down one eye. Now a days he never seems happy. He works for Murphy and, he's teamed up with Kyle Worthy. He can usually be found in the saloon after work, gambling, or wallowing in a beer, or both.

John White Aaron Vanek
John White may be the most honest, upstanding cowboy this side of the Pecos. He currently works for Miss Elizabeth Cameron (and ol' man Cameron before he died), but has worked for many of the ranches around Lincoln in the past years: Chisum, Lowell, Ragsdale, etc. In terms of handling animals, John White is the best there is; he can tame any stallion, lasso any calf, ride any bull, etc. When he's in town, he can be found in church every Sunday and rarely ever visits the saloon. He's close friends with Miss Elizabeth Cameron and the town gossips have it that the two of them will tie the knot ANY day now.

Kyle Worthy -- Brian McInnis
Kyle breezed into town about a year ago and immediately started working for Lawrence Murphy. He arrived in town at about the same time that Billy Morton came back from the war, and the two of them started working together. It seems to be working well for all parties involved, including Murphy. Murphy has said that Kyle is one of his best hands.

Wayne Gardner -- Brian Kowalczyk
Wayne is noticeably bright and well-educated for a ranch hand. He's a Union vet, originally from Kentucky. Wayne was one of those rare guys who really did want to free the slaves. Wayne is in his late 20s. Wayne is very cool under pressure. Nothing seems to get him upset. Maybe it's his war experience, or maybe there's just something wrong with his head. Wayne has been known to read literature as a hobby. He's a fair pugilist and goes for the occasional prize-fight, but he's no Harry Monahan. He likes to carouse as much as any other guy, but never appears to get very drunk, lose a lot of money gambling or otherwise lose control.

Caleb Price -- Nick Schlensker
Caleb Price is a hand on Chisum's ranch, a cool man with a gun and a bit of a mystery to others. He came from back east several years ago and occasionally has a slight central european accent. Price doesn't talk much about himself, but is otherwise friendly. He enjoys saloon girls, a little poker and faro, whiskey and beer, all that sort of thing. Price is known to be a good shot. He's in his late 20's.

Townspeople

Alex H. "Ham" Mills -- Sean Young
Sheriff Mills is the brutally efficient and mostly disliked Sheriff of Lincoln. He's well-known to be a blazingly fast gunman, an excellent rider and a superb marksman. He'll shoot first and let the Judge (or the coroner) ask questions later. Largely, he's more concerned with keeping things peaceful than investigating people's claims of wrong-doing. This has made him unpopular with many people in town, particularly (and currently) with Elizabeth Cameron. He can often be found drinking alone at the bar, or chatting with Cody Cartwright.

Nicholas Hansen -- Ronald Pieket
Nicholas Hansen is the only employee of the bank in town, owned and otherwise operated by Mayor Zechariah Chamberlain. He was born in Europe and immigrated to North America as a young man, so still has the accent of his homeland, an accent the Ladies find quite interesting! This polite man has worked at the bank for the better part of 10 years now, and otherwise keeps to himself on a small piece of property nearby. He has recently managed to shoot himself somehow, supposedly cleaning the gun that is kept in the bank. The more gun-experienced cowboys have gotten quite a laugh out of this. Hansen has been a good sport, though; after a few drinks, he has been willing to show off the wound he got. He is good friends with Miss Annie Hunt, and may be the only man she has not run off at the end of a rifle.

James J. "Jimmy" Dolan -- Pat Mannion
Jimmie Dolan was born April 22, 1848 in County Galway, Ireland. His family moved to New York when he was 5 where he grew up in the Irish slums. He enlisted in the army after the 1863 draft riots. He served in the civil war and was eventually discharged in 1869 in New Mexico. He was hired as a clerk by L.G. Murphy and eventually became a partner in the company. In Lincoln, he runs the store and manages "the House" and runs a barber shop adjacent to the store. He is know for having a bit of a hot, Irish temper and it was a heated argument with base commander Captain Randlett that led to the eviction of LG Murphy & Co. from Fort Stanton in 1873.

Annie Hunt -- Kirsten Hageleit
Miz Hunt's husband, a silver prospector, died of Influenza during the recent outbreak. Since then, she's made a living in town taking in laundry and mending for the many, many unmarried cowpokes, townfolk and prospectors. Many a man has gone to her with flowers and chocolates (purchased at great expense), only to be run off at the end of her rifle. Thankfully, she's a good shot and no-one has been seriously hurt. Her one close friend is Nicholas Hansen, the foreigner that works in the Mayor's bank, although she's also been known to go drinkin' with the horse rancher, Lily McCulloch.

Mayor Zechariah Chamberlain -- Stuart Kalbrofsky
Zechariah is the mayor of Lincoln and darn proud of it. He also owns the Bank of Lincoln. The townspeople come to him with their problems and he always does his best to help them sort things out. He is well respected and well liked by just about everyone.

Nicodemus Grimes -- Jason Lindgren
Judge Grimes has just recently retired from being a circuit Judge, purchased land and a house and taken up residence in Lincoln County as a Probate Judge. His reputation is that he's a heartless, pitiless ol' coot of a Judge. In fact, one story has him sentencing his own brother to starve in the desert "to let the land decide his fate". He's a physical wreck of a man, and lives in two rooms of a larger, but dilapidated and otherwise boarded up ranch house outside of town. His hired help stay in the barn. He's currently the Probate Judge presiding over the contested Ragsdale estate.

"Salacious Jack" O'Hooligan -- Kirin Robinson
Skinny and malicious. Though officially serving under the sheriff of Lincoln City, trigger-happy Jack reports directly to Judge Nicodemus and generally spends his time carrying out sentences, gambling away his hangman's bounty and avoiding paternity suits. Bearing a missing ear and an apache knife scar and a dusty derby-hat, Salacious Jack is prone to occasional fits and seizures, and he has a constant crazed air of nervous energy about him. He has been barred from the tavern for numerous periods of time for drawing his gun during card games. He lives in Grimes' dusty mansion about 4 miles outside of town where he enjoys head-bully status among the dozen or so cattle hands that reside on the ranch, though he frequently spends nights curled up next to the peat barrels behind the tavern. He and the Sheriff don't get along much, and rarely work together. Grimes sticks by Jack, though, and that means he's been untouchable.

Cody Cartwright -- Kevin Flanagan
Cody recently bought the saloon from the nasty old owner. He seems to be doing a better job of running it; he has yet to run out of liquor. He honestly likes running the saloon and is a great bartender. He's gotten the ladies from the brothel to start spending time in the saloon again, a very popular man. And hey, he even managed to get the Sheriff, Ham Mills to talk to him, and that's pretty impressive.

Madame Celeste -- Helen Nauert
Everyone knows the brothel madam, Celeste. She dresses well, is quite attractive and can carry on a decent conversation even. Plus, if you want one of the girls, you gotta go through her. Since Cody bought the saloon, everyone sees a lot more of her and the girls there, now there's gambling, drinking, and purdy women, what more could a man ask for? Madame Celeste is said to have a heart of gold. During the influenza epidemic, she and her girls nursed the sick, she contributed a large piece of the money that built the new schoolhouse, and she seems to genuinely care about all the people in Lincoln, young and old, male and female.

Dr. Lawrence "Red" Jackson-- David Altman
Dr. Jackson is quite an accomplished gambler. He ain't too bad as a doctor either. He has been in Lincoln since it was established, and has a well established practice. He is Lincoln's only doctor, not just the city, but the county.

Molly b'Dam Colleen Kennedy
Molly certainly has grown up. When she arrived in Lincoln she was rough, the kind of girl the cow hands banged out behind the barn. Now, with rare exception, she only sees the well paying gentlemen. The men love to chat it up with her in the saloon, she is one of the girls who often accompanies Madame Celeste. But everyone, including Molly, knows you gotta talk to Madame Celeste if you want anything other than talk in the saloon.

Silas "Cy" Ragsdale Jr. Kevin Moran
Silas Ragsdale Jr..(or Cy as he's liked to be called) is the son of the late Silas Ragsdale who owned a fairly large ranch. He and his father fought famously, largely over his father's decision to sell their plantation back east and move to the Lincoln Territory. Now that his father has passed on, Cy continues to fight bitterly with his stepmother, the young widow Emily Ragsdale, over his inheritance. Usually, Cy can be found playing cards at the saloon, pointedly not helping out at the ranch.

Adelia Beauchamp Laurie Simpson
About six months ago, Adelia was given a trial run as the school marm. The kids seem to like her, and the town does too. She's prim and proper and always in church on Sunday, which is more than can be said for most of you. She's single, and the men all know it. Perhaps one day one of them will steal her heart.

Jose Chavez y Sanchez Jim Keller
Senor Sanchez is the town's miller. He's also the only Mexican in town that is worth anything at all (please note that there are LOTS of Mexicans in and around Lincoln. Most are farmhands and their families.) As he's quite willing to tell anyone who'll listen, he actually owned a big ranch out in Alta California, near San Francisco, but sold it all when the United States bought the land from Mexico. He makes his living purchasing timber from the mountains to the north and milling it here for the growing community. Unless one is willing to cut one's own timber, Sanchez' mill is the only place to buy it in Lincoln.

Other Well Known People

Thomas "Jack" Jackson Phil Adler
Judge Jackson is the Circuit Court Judge that moves from town to town settling disputes and taking care of other legal business as needed. Although he keeps an actual home somewhere else, he frequents Lincoln often enough to be treated as a local and not a stranger. He is considered fair and just, with a no-nonsense courtroom manner. After his work is done, he can often be found in the saloon drinking, dancing or gambling with the best of them. He was an officer in the Union army during the Civil War.

Sister Alejandra Doris Daou
The sister is a good woman. She runs the local orphanage and cares for the children. She is a quiet woman and rarely comes into town, after all, she has her hands full with all the kids she has to take care of. As a treat, she is taking the orphans into town for the county fair.

Irving Rudolph Quimby Christian Brown
Mr. Quimby is one of those old prospectors that spent just a little too much time out in the wilds away from other human contact. It makes him just a little harmlessly loopy, drifting off in the middle of sentences and such. He comes to town for supplies once every few months, bringing gold dust (and sometimes some nuggets) with him and leaving poor again, but stocked well enough for the next few months.

Al Schieffelin Tapani Ronni
Al Schieffelin is one of the younger prospectors, not yet completely grizzled with age and weather. He comes to town fairly regularly for more supplies at Murphy's store and to gamble the rest of his gold away at the saloon.

Strangers

Lilly Bernhardt Michelle Thaller
Lilly Bernhard, the famous entertainer arrived in town about a week ago. Anyone who's seen her performances knows what a truly talented performer she is. Her show is a variety, some acting, some singing, some dancing, and she does all of it quite well. She seems to be something of a primadonna, but even so, many men are still attracted to her.

Tonto CC Teodero
An Indian tracker and guide very recently arrived in town.

Matt Hawk Shawn Heslin
Matt Hawk is widely regarded as the fastest gun in the West. The only two men who might have come close are both dead. He's been up against some of the best of the rest and gunned them all down. A well dressed and seemingly polite man he nevertheless carries himself with an air of supreme confidence bordering on arrogance.

Lady Veronica Featherleigh Roselle Hurley
Veronica, a British lady is recently arrived. She is vacationing out west. A bit strange, but then again, she's been seen in pants and boots riding horseback. She seems very curious about Lincoln and wants a chance to talk to everyone.

Willie Davis John Thompson
Willie Davis came to town a couple of days ago seeking the extra work that is typically available during an event such as the County Fair. He has shown himself to be a hard worker and seems quite personable. He has made several inquiries about getting a more permanent job after the Fair ends.
