William Bonney will not be appearing in this game. In 1875, he was 16 and definitely living on the other side of the state in Silver City, New Mexico. But there history ends and the game begins. In the game, the town of Lincoln may be considered to be the size of the stereotypical movie frontier Western town and not the somewhat pathetic collection of adobe huts that it was. So anything or any type of person you think should be in a Western could possibly be found in the game.
People are welcome to play historical characters or characters of their own imagination. The major historical figures such as Chisum and Murphy will be present in the game. However, most everything else is wide open. Some possible types of characters are ranch owners, ranch hands, shopkeepers, gamblers, dance hall entertainers, etc. People should also feel free to make suggestions.
In the Western genre many, if not most, tales are about how a town or community solves its own problems in its own way. The game will be structured in a way to promote this sort of an overarching storyline by limiting the number of strangers in town to 10% of the characters. This means only 4 people in a 40 person game will be allowed to play complete strangers. Please note that characters such as the crazy prospector who comes down out of the hills once every six months or the territorial officials who only come to town every few months or the prodigal son returning after a couple of years' absence are not considered strangers.
The roles of women in the historical and mythical West are very open. In this game there are only two limitations: women cannot be in the army and they cannot vote (this doesn't mean they can't control votes). Women players should also feel free to play male characters.
Note from GM: I will be looking for 2 or 3 people to play "cast". There will be times when we need a character to show up, perform a certain function in a certain way, and then exit stage left. Everyone currently involved is entitled to a "real character" but if you feel the need to do your time and want to do this, let me know. You'll be expected to show up early for briefing and help out with various backstage tasks.
