October 6th, 2008, - Okay, its been a while since I've updated. Two Grand Nationals(Long Beach, CA & Houston, TX), have come and gone. I now am webmaster for the BAA website. I have quite a few young budgies available. I am hand-rearing baby cockatiels, and am dancing in anticipation of my Rosellas' eggs hatching. The incubator I have not had a chance to turn on, it is too large, but I have hopes that I will still use it eventually.
August 25th, 2007 - My incubator has arrived. I decided to order an incubator, so that I can make sure the eggs are being sat properly. I will artificially incubate the eggs, and then swap them out with fakes the hens will be sitting on when it comes time for the eggs to hatch. I've had quite a few eggs that I think were fertile, but did not get turned properly, and some that got dirty and died. We'll see how this goes.
July 8th, 2007 - Last week I ran out of parakeet seed. Or rather, the seed was sitting at the store and I forgot to bring it home. But it inspired me to cook more for my birds. I have cooked before in the past, but usually no more than once or twice a week. This past week I have come up with a few interesting recipes to cook, store, and feed my birds. The first two were easy pre-measured types like Crazy Corn, and Beak Apetit. I then came up with my own mix of barley, green lentils, and hulled millet. All of the mixes I make large batches, put in zip-loc baggies and then spread into a thin layer, toss in the freezer. To feed to the birds I break off a chunk, add maybe a half teaspoon of water and nuke.Tonight I made some couscous with dehydrated bell pepper bits. I've intentionally used dried foods that are easy to store, and also freeze well. Theoretically its less expensive to feed cooked foods than seed, I think I will now add more cooked foods for my birds, but still feed some seed.
