| Structure of Hillel | |||||||||||||||||
| International/National Hillel- located in Washington, D.C, these are the people you techincally taught by and use as a resource for education, tzedek, etc. There are many people who make up the International Center. Richard Joel- President and International Director Rhoda Weisman- Chief Creative Officer; Director, Center for Jewish Engagement. Oversees the JCSC program. Melanie Sasson Gruenwald- She also oversees the JCSCs, works right under Rhoda. Used to be a JCSC herself, then a Steinhardt Scholar International Hillel > Hillel of Greater Baltimore Hillel of Greater Baltimore oversees the budget, staff, and community wide events. They are the central hub for all administrative work involved with Hillel. | Engagment and Empowerment Issues | |||||||||||||||||
| At Hillel here at UMBC, the issue of engagment and empowerment is a blurred one. In the beginning of my year, I was solely engagment but I saw the need for empowerment wherever I went. We are an emerging campus in the sense that Hillel has only been around for a handful of years. The engagement/empowerment model works well for a campus that already has defined groups. However, in our early years here at UMBC, I believe that most of the work or 'foundation' work we do is engagement with advisory tendencies. | |||||||||||||||||
| Responsibilites | |||||||||||||||||
| " All Jews are responsible for one another" As a staff member- You are obligated to attend all staff meetings and conferences they have. Being apart of a larger group you feel much more connected and if you ever have any problems you can easily go to anyone at HGB. As a Fellow- Being a fellow is an awesome responsibility (more on that later!!). You are now apart of a much larger 100 member team that spans from "sea to shining sea". They are your friends, your comrades, your "partners in crime." You are required to attend Leaders Assembly, Professional Staff Conference, East Coast Kallah, and JCSC Shabbaton. |

| Resources and Partners | |||||||||||||||||
| As a JCSC you are encouraged to form 3 partnerships: 1- YOU & UMBC 2- YOU & Baltimore Jewish Community 3- YOU & National Jewish Community How does one find resources? Know the community? Know the country? Well, first of all, you must think about what you would like to accomplish and with that I will give you an example in which I was able to tap into all 3 groups... Purim Treats for the Troops I used this as a way for students here at UMBC & colleges around Baltimore to help Jewish troops serving overseas Which partnerships were being used and how? 1- YOU & UMBC- I used several resources here on campus: Dining Services, Office of Residential Life, Delta Kappa Sigma, Hillel 2- YOU & Baltimore Jewish Community- I brought pre-made card that needed to be filled out to the "Have a Nice Day" Cafe event in downtown Baltimore and had students from all over to fill it out. 3- YOU & National Jewish Community- the Purim bags we made were sent to the Jewish troops all over the world. Was done in conjunction with the Jewish Welfare Board based out of New York City. |
