A scanning electron micrograph of the etched surface of the Titanic hull steel.
METALLOGRAPHY CONT.
The micrograph on the right was achieved using a scanning electron microscope.  The surface of the Titanic hull steel was etched with 2% Nital as well as being thoroughly polished.
The dark grey areas of the micrograph are ferrite.  The very dark oval shaped structure is a particle of MnS, that was identified by energy-dispersive x-ray analysis.  It is elongated in the direction of the banding, which suggests that the banding is a result of the hot rolling of the steel.  Also visible in the micrograph are small non-metallic particles, some of the ferrite grain boundaries and pearlite colonies.
