Critical Appraisal of an IT-based Teaching Material

Name of the educational web site: Common Errors in English

 U RL:  http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~brians/errors/index.html

Founder: Dr. Paul Brians, Professor of English Washington State University

Objective: List out different kinds of common errors in English Usage in order to  help students avoid repeating the mistakes.

Merits:

1.          Cover a wide range of English usage. Clearly distinguish between “error  in   usage” and “error in grammar”.

2.          Good organization and clear presentation.

3.          Easily control by a mouse only. Students can learn by themselves at home.

4.          Link up with other educational web sites / reference web sites encouraging users in continuous learning.

  Shortcomings:

  1.          Monotonous presentation. Difficult to motivate students to learn.

2.          No exercise or activity for participation. Less interaction involved. Low degree of participation and interaction lead to an inefficient learning.

3.          Too many words, without sound and picture, let the users feel like reading a book.

Rationale of Integrating Information Technology in Teaching and Learning

  1. Environment

-           Teaching and learning will not be limited in the classroom only.

-           Students can learn through other media (educational web sites, electronic courseware, etc.) by themselves at anywhere.

-           Globalization of education.

-           Using of IT in daily life becomes popular due to the worldwide advanced development of information technology.

  2.Role of Teacher

-           Traditional way of communication in teaching becomes out-dated.

-           Utilize IT-based teaching materials; encourage students’ motivation and participation.

-           Initiate the students to think and response.

-           Search information from the Internet.

  3. Learning

-           Multimedia teaching materials encourage some degree of interactivity between students and instructors. Learning becomes more effective.

-           The dependence on textbooks becomes less important because of their limitation.

-           Students can acquire global knowledge.

-           Self learning

-           With the information linked up in the “Internet World”, continuous self learning is enabled.

Evaluate reflectively the effectiveness of the use of IT in the classroom

  1. Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a useful tool in presentation. I have used it to prepare my handouts during lessons. With sounds, music, colourful and interesting pictures and movies showed, students become much motivated and attended.

  2. Microsoft Word

It is useful for me to prepare notes or exam paper for the class.

  3.  Microsoft Excel

It is useful for me to handle some reports about figure. It helps to save time.

  4. Internet

I can search information from the Internet. On the other hand, I can upload the useful information in the Internet for the students to access. Moreover, students can continue to learn after class through Internet with my guideline.
