MY COLLEGE

HISTORY

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (erstwhile Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute) popularly known as VJTI is on the threshold of a transformation full of never-seen-before opportunities and a lot of promise. Ever since its inception, the institute has nurtured its strong bonds with the industry and has created an identity of its own. The very thought of being able to contact and transact with sister institutes, our patrons from industry and most of all, our enlightened alumni over the Internet is very exciting. VJTI is currently one of the best engineering college in India and ranked second only to IIT Powai in Maharashtra. (Its quite a coincidence considering that the 1st batch of faculty in IIT Powai was taken from VJTI itself !!!)

Established in 1887, the V. J. T. Institute started with only two departments, namely the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Ripon Textile School for the two branches of industry in which Bombay was vitally interested at the time. The aim was to with a desire to meet the technical manpower requirements of Bombay. The first step in the expansion of the Institute was taken in 1903 when courses in Electrical Engineering were introduced. Further, Production, Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Computers Engineering courses were introduced.

In the early days, the Institute was housed in Byculla in a building donated for the purpose by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit. In the course of development, the Institute's building at Byculla proved insufficient for the growing number of students who sought admission and soon after the First World War in 1923, the Institute moved to its present and more commodious, specially constructed building at Matunga, which represents the most important landmark in the history of the Institute.

Prior to 1960 Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute was the only Institute offering Engineering degree and Post Graduate courses under the University of Bombay and enjoyed defacto autonomy. Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute has played a very vital role in curriculum development such as the introduction of new courses, framing their syllabi and their examination schemes at the University level.

CAMPUS

The VJTI campus is situated in central Matunga. It is centrally located between the Central and Western railway lines of Mumbai. The campus covers an area of 6.5 Hectares. The built up area is around 41,600 sq. m. There are three main buildings: The main building, which encloses the quadrangle. This building extends into the textile department building. And adjacent to this is the Mechanical Department building. The campus also includes the Principal's bungalow. VJTI also has four hostels. The A and B block of the hostels are older, existing for over fifty years. The newer C & D blocks have been built later to accommodate growing demand.

The present site at Matunga covers an area of sixteen acres and the Institute is readily accessible by the two branches of the Central Railway from Matunga and Wadala stations and by BEST buses. The locality has grown into an educational and technological center of the University of Mumbai.
