| R'met, I am still hungry. "Then eat." His rider grunted. He held his spyglass high, and made another note on his wherhide sheet. But you are busy. I want you to do something for me... R'met sighed. "What is it, Jal?" The dragon looked up from his low couch and almost seemed to grin like a feline. I want to use your spy glass to hunt. I want to spot my prey from here, like you spot your stars. You can do that, can't you? "But..." R'met started to say, but then only laughed. "Well, you've grown but you're not too big to be careful with little things. Here. How about using this one." R'met took up his older and less-expensive distance-viewer and handed it to his dragon. He only shook his head in bemused disbelief when the dragon spotted his prey. Now if only you could have a pouch made for one... You could even put it on our riding leathers... The dragon's words trailed off as he took to the air in a low, long glide over the herdbeasts. |

| "Jal, do I see this right?" R'met nudged his now-adult-sized dragon. The blue swung his head around to where his rider indicated, and suddenly Jalanath puffed up and bugled loudly. THREAD! "That's what I thought! Come on, we've got to get back to the weyr and warn them! This is... over North Point Cothold..." R'met looked around, carefully looking at the rocky landscape and saw some of the farmers down below scattering at the bugle of Threadfall. They went between, back to Talor Cliff, and then announced breathlessly that Thread was falling. Others moved into action, but Weyrwoman Falora put her strong hand on the handsome rider's shoulder. "You need to stay here, R'met. We've been speaking, Shard and I," she indicated the tall tan skinned man beside her. R'met knew of the weyrleader but ... "What's this about? We should be out there flying!" Shard spoke up, "R'met, you're too valuable as a Starcrafter to risk getting hurt in Thread. If you want to, there is an opening in our Currier wing. The others in it are Starcrafters, Search riders and the like." I want to fight Thread! Cried Jalanath. "Of course you do, and you will, but your rider can't be risked too often, his skill in detecting Thread is too important to all of us. You're a very special dragon too you know, for choosing him." Falora patted the blue, his angry-red eyes whirling down into a more patient golden color. "Well, can't we even fly this one?" R'met asked, but somewhere deep in his heart, he was glad they'd been stopped. He had seen Threadscore and didn't want any part of it! Shard shook his head. "If you follow Jeremoth and I back to the Protectorate, we'll set you up. The Currier wing is spread out, and not really what I'd call a real "wing". But I think you'll like it among them." |
