| How to read prayerfully Reading something in 'in the spirit' means to open your heart and let God guide you to the true meaning of his message. God sends you messages though people and events, among other things, and people sometimes miss his message because they aren't listening or watching 'in the spirit'. This is one reason why the bible seems so confusing, outdated, big and boring to some people. Because you must be reading 'in the spirit' in order to understand and apply it to your life. The way you do this, is simple. Just say a prayer before reading the material, such as: Dear God, please help me, guide me, and lead me in all that I do, but especially help me to understand the word you are giving me today.
