Fall 2000
New Season Kicks Off With Dry land Training
Even before the snow began to fly, QVSC athletes were preparing for the upcoming season by attending fitness training every Sunday afternoon.  These sessions were held in the gymnasium at Bert Fox Composite High School in Fort Qu'Appelle and were conducted by either Kirk Cochrane, Cory Cochrane or Sheridan Godwin.  Turnout was great with more than 20 athletes participating each Sunday.  Each workout began with a warm up and stretching followed by alpine ski oriented exercises and ended with a game.  QVSC would like to extend their appreciation to the school for allowing us to utilize their facilities.

Delaney Joins Provincial Juvenile Team

QVSC's own Kara Delaney is participating with the Alpine Saskatchewan Provincial Juvenile Team this season.  The team has been training at mountain camps approximately every second week in preparation for the upcoming competitive year.  Kara will be competing throughout the season with the team at various events in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan under the direction of Sask's Juvenile Coach, Marc Daneau.  All of QVSC wishes Kara the best in her endeavors.

Mountain Mileage Camp Well Attended

     Ribbon Creek Hostel in Kananaskis

Twenty-six racers, one snowboarder, three coaches and five chaperones boarded the Engelheim Charter bus driven by Dave Milne for the trip to Kananaskis for four days of skiing.  Ribbon Creek Hostel (left) was our home for the week.  It is a great place for everyone to come together as a team and provides enough space to be able to prepare and eat meals, do school work, play games or just hang out.

Despite very cold temperatures we skied every day at either Nakiska or Lake Louise.  The athletes were put into three different groups to ski with coaches Kirk Cochrane, John McNally or Sheridan Godwin.  Due to the frigid temperatures and lack of snow not as many runs were made as I would have liked, however I must commend Kelci Breti and Kristen Solvey for sticking it out right up to closing the last day!  Perhaps there was one run too many taken by chaperone Kevin Fenwick as he managed to injure his knee - on, as his sons like to point out, a very easy section of a blue run!
Everyone was put into teams for food preparation and cleanup and all did their part.  There were some very interesting presentations of the food, such as burnt spaghetti in gooey lumps or pizza that could be used as a Frisbee without falling apart.

QVSC Trains At Asessippi
Some members of the QVSC Alpine Race Team traveled to Asessippi Ski Area in Manitoba to take the opportunity to get in some GS training before the upcoming races in Panorama, B.C.  John McNally accompanied  the athletes and they trained with the Manitoba Provincial team.  By all accounts this was a successful event as Asessippi was very accommodating and could provide an excellent run for training GS.
