Quota International of Cupertino is involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Program, Christmas for teenage daughters of abused mothers, Hearing dog program, Cochlear implants.
- Breast Cancer Awareness. As is true with virtually everyone, our members all have been touched in one way or another by the challenges of breast cancer. For the past 12 years, Cupertino Quota has devoted its October program to some facet of breast cancer awareness. We've had as speakers women who have recovered from breast cancer, a man who also is a survivor and his wife, those who have participated in the 3-day awareness walk from the South Bay to San Francisco, and medical experts in detection and treatment. These open discussions have made it easier for all of us to deal with the Big-C situation when it arises, whether individually, in family, or with friends.
- Christmas for Teenage Daughters of Abused Mothers. We learned from a local volunteer with the Support Network for Battered Women of how left out the daughters who live with their abused mothers at the shelter feel at Christmas-time. At our November meeting, each member brings a gift or $15 to be spent on a gift for the daughters of abused mothers in the local shelter (boys of that age are not housed in that facility). While Christmas should be a time of joy, it is not for teenage girls in that situation. It is very moving when the Support Network rep. who attends our November meeting speaks personally of the situations she witnesses, and she takes our gifts back to the shelter.
- San Francisco SPCA Hearing Dog Program. The Hearing Dog Program is one of several nationally which trains dogs to respond to audible signals of alarm, unheard by their deaf owners. It is one of many organizations to which we give monetary awards each year. This one, however, has a particular appeal, and we usually devote one of our program meetings to a presentation of the Hearing Dog Program. A handler from their San Francisco office comes with one of his trainee dogs to our meeting and demonstrates how the dog is trained to respond to an audible signal, whether phone, smoke alarm, door bell, etc. As funds permit, we award to this organization, and we always look forward to another of their presentations.
- Cochlear implants. A past member and her daughter were speakers at one of our program meetings about the implant's effect on the daughter's life today. It was a moving presentation. Quota International of Cupertino has supported cochlear implants with grants on an ongoing basis.
