Jesse Gross Davis, Sr. etc \l 1 Jesse Gross Davis, Sr.

First Generation etc \l 2 First Generation

1. Jesse Gross1 Davis Sr. was born in Nelson Co., KY Oct 31, 1792. Jesse Davis:Jesse Gross, Sr. (1792-1860)
died March 14, 1860 Pike County IN, at 67 years of age. His Davis:Jesse Gross, Sr. (1792-1860) body was interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Davis Cemetery.

He Davis:Jesse Gross, Sr. (1792-1860) married Nancy Mason Mason:Nancy (1795-1896) in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY, Dec 21, 1815. Nancy Mason:Nancy (1795-1896) was born in Kentucky Jan 6, 1795.
Nancy was the daughter of John Mason Mason:John ( - ) and Hannah Hutcheson Hutcheson:Hannah ( - ).
Nancy Mason:Nancy (1795-1896) died Jan 9, 1896 Pike County IN, at 101 years of age. Her Mason:Nancy (1795-1896) body was interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Davis Cemetery.
Consent for the marriage of Nancy and Jesse was granted by her mother on December 19, 1815. Her mothers name was listed as Hannah Mayson.

Just after her daughter Tacy died, Nancy left land in a deed conveyance in October 1874, to her grandchildren by Jesse Clifford. (see attached).

Obit: Pike County Democrat, Friday, Jan 17, 1896 Nancy Davis, the oldest person in this section of the country, died at the residence of James Black last Sunday.
She was one hundred and one years old and was drawing a pension as surviving widow of the war of 1812.
She was a sister to William and David Mason, Sr., who died a short time ago.
Jesse fought in the War of 1812 in John Farmers Kentucky Militia.
On September 28, 1850 the government passed an act awarding 80 acres of land as bounty for any survivors of the War of 1812.
On March 3, 1855 they passed another act allowing those same veterans an additional 80 acres of land.
Jesse was awarded 80 acres of land on bounty land warrant 6274 and another 80 acres of land on bounty land warrant 46179.
On March 9, 1878 the government passed an act allowing widows of veterans of the War of 1812 to file for a pension.

In his pension file, on April 24, 1855, Jesse stated that he was 63 years old and a resident of Pike Co IN.
That he had served for the term of six months (Nov 27, 1814 to May 10, 1815) in the war of 1812 against Great Britain,
that he had received bounty land of 80 acres and had legally disposed of it. He was applying for his second 80 acres.

In 1878, Nancy filed for a widows pension. She states that her husband at the time of his enlistment at age 23 was a farmer about six feet, black hair, hazel eyes and had dark complexion.
She states that he was born in Nelson County KY and that they were married in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY by Martin Utterback a Baptist minister.
She states that her maiden name was Mason. From the date of their marriage to October 1819 they resided in Bardstown, KY (Nelson Co) when they moved to Gibson Co., IN
where they remained about 20 years and then moved to Pike Co., IN where they lived until the death of her husband and where she still resided.

In the Tax lists for Hardin Co, KY Jesse is not listed in 1814. He is listed in 1815 as owning one horse/mule worth $30. He is not listed in 1816 or any year after.
According to Nancys pension affadavit, they were in Nelson Co, KY right after their marriage.

There is a Jesse Davis that purchased land Aug 28, 1818 in Gibson County IN. He also purchased land on Sept 11, 1821, January 11,1834 and March 30, 1836 in Gibson Co IN.
Buying land in the same parcel was Robert Clark Davis (Nov 14, 1818), Joel Davis (Sept 30, 1835) and William Ross Davis (Dec 12, 1834).
Its possible that Jesse was related to these Daviss. There is a Robert Davis listed in the 1815 Hardin Co KY tax list.

Jesse is listed in the 1820 and 1830 Gibson County IN census. There is a Robert C. Davis, William R Davis and David Davis listed also.

In the parcel next to one above, John Davis purchased land May 13, 1833 and July 31, 1836.

While living in Gibson County Jesse purchased land in Pike Co. IN on March 29, 1837. He is listed in the 1840 census in Pike Co.

Jesse also purchased land in Pike County on Nov 25, 1848, July 14, 1849, Sept 21, 1850, and June 5, 1851 (used his Military Land Warrant). In the same section of land his sons John J. and David J. also purchased land.

Based on the number of children listed in the 1840 census we have added those missing to our list.

In the 1850 census Jesse and family are in Pike Co IN in Monroe township.
Their grandchildren Lydia and Josiah Davis (children of David Jackson Davis and wife Lydia ?) are living with them.
We know these are not Jesses children because he states that his daughter Tasey Lewis Davis born in 1842 is his youngest daughter.
After Jesses son Davids wife Lydia died he had remarried so we assume that his mother took his two youngest children to raise.
In 1860 Nancy is living alone with her children still in Monroe township after Jesses death. In 1870, Nancy is living with her daughter Tacy Clifford and her family still in Monroe township.

Jesse left a will dated Dec 21, 1855 in Pike County, IN.
He only bequeathed land and/or goods to his wife, his 4 youngest children and one granddaughter.
He named his son David Jackson Davis as cutor.
His older children may not have needed support or he may have already settled land or money on them at an earlier date.
(See attached will transcription). In 1860 the disposition of items was made based on Jesses will (see attached).
He left beds to two of his daughters, his wife and his granddaughter. The value of his estate was approximately $3500.00.

In Sept 1881, an heirship deed conveying land to Jesse Clifford was filed in Pike County, IN (see attached).
All of Jesses children are listed: David J., John J., Jesse G., Benoni S., Candis, Hannah Ritter, Nancy L., Sarah and Mary Ann.

Second Generation etc \l 2 Second Generation

2. Wilson2 Davis (Jesse Gross1) birth date unknown.

He Davis:Wilson ( - ) married Jemima Davis Davis:Jemima (1820- ) in Posey Co., IN, March 13,1838.
Jemima Davis:Jemima (1820- ) was born 1820. Jemima was the daughter of unknown :unknown ( - ) and unknown :unknown ( - ).
There is no proof that Wilson is the son of Jesse and Nancy Davis except in 1850 his widow, Jemima, (we believe) is living next to them in Monroe Township, Pike Co. and all her children names fit his parents names.

Also in the heirship deed for Jesse Davis Sr., Jemima is listed as a grantor, but not as an heir.
All of Jesses heirs are listed as such above, but Jemima is only listed as an owner and grantor. Therefore we assume that her dead husband Wilson was the son of Jesse and Nancy.

Wilson Davis Davis:Wilson ( - ) and Jemima Davis Davis:Jemima (1820- ) had the following children:

+ 15
 i. Jesse Davis:Jesse (1840- )3 Davis Davis:Jesse (1840- ) was born in Indiana 1840. 16
 ii. Henry Davis Davis:Henry (1842- ) was born 1842. 17
iii. Mary Davis Davis:Mary (1844- ) was born in Indiana 1844. 18
iv. Nancy Davis Davis:Nancy (1846- ) was born in Indiana 1846. 19
v. Hannah Davis Davis:Hannah (1849- ) was born in Indiana 1849.

3. David Jackson2 Davis (Jesse Gross1) was born in Kentucky 1817.

He married twice. He Davis:David Jackson (1817- ) married Lydia :Lydia (1816-1844) bef 1837.
Lydia :Lydia (1816-1844) was born April 11, 1816. Lydia :Lydia (1816-1844) died June 12, 1844 at 28 years of age.
Her :Lydia (1816-1844) body was interred in Spurgeon, Pike Co., IN, Black Cemetery. Lydia more than likely died in childbirth, since her last child was born in the year she died.

He Davis:David Jackson (1817- ) married Ellen Lavinia Farris Farris:Ellen Lavinia (1823- ) Pike County IN, Oct 17, 1844.
Ellen Farris:Ellen Lavinia (1823- ) was born Illinois 1823. David Jackson purchased land in Pike County on Sept 10, 1838.
He is listed on the 1840 Pike Co IN census.
They were in Monroe Township, Pike Co IN in 1850, 1860 and 1870.
The last two children (Lydia and Josiah) born to Davids wife Lydia are living with their grandparents (Jesse and Nancy Mason Davis) in 1850.
This is supposition based on the following: The small child Lydia is mentioned in Jesses Daviss will as his grandchild. Her name is the same as Davids first wife Lydia.

David Jackson Davis Davis:David Jackson (1817- ) and Lydia :Lydia (1816-1844) had the following children:

+ 20 i. Joel Davis:Joel (1837- )3 Davis Davis:Joel (1837- ) was born 1837.

+ 30 xi. Jasper Davis Davis:Jasper (1852- ) was born 1852.
+ 31 xii. Jane Luffrone Davis Davis:Jane Luffrone (1854- ) was born in Indiana 1854.
