MY NAURUAN RECONSTRUCTIONS (Have you ever noticed that 'Nauruan' is a palindrome?)
Click here to see a Big Mountain album cover featuring a string figure maker!
The following is a collection of string figures (cat's cradle) I have invented. They are for somewhat advanced string figure makers. To make them all you need is a string about 8-10 feet long tied into a closed loop. If you don't know anything about string figures I suggest going to this site to learn more.
I hope you enjoy these figures -- please distribute them to anyone you know. If you like/hate them, have some of your own, can't make sense of an instruction, or have anything whatsoever to say about these figures or anything else, feel free to email me. Many of the figures involve completely original series of movements, but some have been borrowed from various cultures. Most important among these borrowings are the Gilbertese braiding techniques and extensions and the Inuit index twist maneuver.
Happy stringing,
Quentin
Qs Diamond (the same as Sun)
invented 1999
1) Opening A.
2) Insert 3 from below into 2 loops. Pinch 1N from above between 2 and 3, twisting up and away through the old 2 loops to create a new 2 loop.
3) 1s hook down on their own 1F string, then go under all other strings to draw 5F through their old loops.
4) Release 5s and extend gently.
NB: Originally, the figure ended here, but it can be displayed better with the Caroline Extension as follows:
5) 345 go under 2 loops and enter 1 loop from below. Hook 1N to the palm and release 1s.
6) 1s go under 2 loops and get 3N and, as they return, 2F.
7) Release 2 loops.
8) Remove 5 from its loop and reset it from below; release 3 and 4.
9) Caroline Extension.

VARIATIONS (2000-2002?)
Pavilion
Method 1:
1) Opening A.
2) Put 2 loops high on fingers. 2 enters 5 loop from above, rotates toward you and up, then enters 1 loop from below. The original 2 loop should still be the topmost loop.
3) Transfer upper 2 loop to 3 from below.
4) Release all 2 loops and transfer 3 loop to 2 from below.
5) Qs Diamond steps 2-9.
Method 2:
1) Place loop on 1s.
2) Put 2s into 1 loops from above and twist them up and away from you to make the 1F string into a 2N string.
3) 5s get 2N.
4) Exchange 2 loops from above, right through left.
5) Qs Diamond steps 2-9.

Monarch Butterfly
(This figure can be extended with the Caroline Extension for a more geometric pattern. To maintain a greater resemblance to a butterfly, do not use the extension.)
Identical to Pavilion Method 1 except that 2 does not enter 1 loop during step 2.

Frog and Unconscious Penguin Series
invented 1999
Frog:
1) Kwakiutl Opening B: Put the untwisted loop on R1, L1, and L2. Hook R2 from above onto the L2N/L1F string. Return twisting R2 away from you and up.
2) 5s go over 2 loops and get 1F.
3) 2s hook down the strings that cross their loops. The old index loop flips over to the back but stays as a dorsal string.
4) R3 gets the L2 dorsal string.
5) L3 goes over both strings of the R3 loop and gets the R2 dorsal string.
6) Release 2s.
7) 2s enter 3 loop from below, then 2 and 3 pinch 1N from above. Twist this string onto 2s through their old loops.
8) Release 1s.
Unconscious Penguin:
9) Transfer 2 loops to 1s from below.
10) In the center of the 1N string there is a large triangle wrapped around it. Insert 2s from above into the triangle. Each 2 hooks up the 1N string on its respective side and twists back up through the triangle, forming a new loop from the 1N string.
11) Release 1s.

Horned Demon
invented around 2001
1) Opening A.
2) 1, over 2 loops, gets 5N.
3) 5, over 2 loops, gets 1F.
4) Exchange 2 loops from above, passing right loop through left.
5) Insert 3 from below into 2 loops; put 2 and 3 from above into upper 1 loop. Pull up upper 1N with 2, pinch transverse lower 1N between 2 and 3, and twist it up through old 2 loops and onto 2.
6) Release 1 loops and extend with hands pointed away from you.
7) Four loops go around the 2N string. Two are closer to the 2 fingers and the other two are closer to the center. Insert each 1 between the inner and outer loops, pushing both strings of the outer loops further out. Then 1 gets the 2F string and draws it out between the two loops.
8) Release 2 loops.
To chop off his horns:
9) Insert 2 into the spaces between the head and the horns, release 1, and extend. The horns hang limply.

Four-Part Series
December 11, 2003
1) Opening A.
2) Insert 2s into 5 loop from above then twist them back towards you and up.
3) Release 5s.
4) Insert 345 into 2 loop from above and hook 2F sharply down to the palm.
5) Release 1s and let their loop hang down. Do not extend. Put 1s away from you into the triangle formed by the hanging loop and the top transverse string. Move them downward and away from one another to hook both strings of the hanging loop, front and back. 1s then get lower 2N on their backs and draw it through the hanging loop strings.
6) Insert 5 into 1 loop from below and hook it down to the palm along with the other two 5 loops. Release 1s.
7) 1s get the transverse 2N on the side closer to the finger than the loops that wrap around it. Release 2s to form Two T*****s. Point hands away to extend, and move 1s back and forth to make them dance!
8) Two of the 5F strings are transverse while one is not. Put 2s into 5 loops from the proximal side and on the near side of the non-transverse string. Hook the two transverse strings and draw them through the 5 loops, releasing 5s. Turn palms away and out to display a figure known as Bungalow or Giant Spider Being.
9) 5s enter from below the 2 loops on the near side of the palmar string (into the lozenges) and take up the 1N string close to the 1s, drawing it back through the lozenges. Release 1s to extend Chomolungma* In All Its Majesty. For a better extension, 1s can pull up the 2F string to shorten it.
10) Put 1s away from you into the triangular spaces on either side of Chomolungmas peak. Release 2s.
11) 2s get 1N from above. Turn palms away and out, keeping top and bottom transverse strings tight, to extend The Scarlet Letter: A Timeless American Classic.

Three of Diamonds: A Continuation of "Ace of Diamonds"
January 24 , 2004
8) Navajo 5s.
9) Draw the transverse 1N string down through the central diamond and up again on the far side as follows: Insert 2s into the space on the far side of the double diamond but on the central side of the loops wrapping around the 5 loops. Hook the double strings forming the far sides of the diamond and pull them toward you over the near diamond strings and the 1N string. Then hook the 1N string with 2s and twist them away and up, creating a new 2 loop from the 1N string.
10) Release 1s and extend slightly.
11) Two pairs of strings wrap around the 2F/5N string. They both go upward and wrap around the 2N string. One pair meets its opposite counterpart in the center of the figure. Insert 1s above the center pair but under the others, push the center pair downward and get 5F string with 1s, drawing them back to their normal position.
12) Release 5s.
Setup for Caroline Extension:
13) Insert 345 into 1 loop from below; release 1s.
14) 1 gets 3N and 2F under 2 loop.

Inuit-Gilbertese Diamonds
January 31, 2004
The Inuit portion of the figure is the opening movements of the figure Seagull:
1) Opening A.
2) Twist 2s away from you and down under the 5 loops, then come back up into 1 loops from below, hooking 1N and twisting back away from you and up to its original position.

Now to rearrange the loops:
4) 1s, under all strings, get 5F.
5) Release 5s.
6) 1s, under upper 2N, get upper 2F.
7) Release 2s.
The Gilbertese section is a Gilbertese Extension:
8) With R3 push R2N down through R1 loop and hold it in the mouth; also bite R2F over the 1 loop.
9) Transfer mouth-loop to R1 from below, and R2 loop to R5 from below.
10) Repeat 8 and 9 with L hand.
11) 2s get the 5N strings near the center of the figure.

The Gilbertese Phoenix (a.k.a. The Overinflated Umbrella)
March 3, 2004
1) Opening A.
2) 1 enters 2 loop from below and returns with 5N. Keep 1 loops separate.
3) Release 5. You now have one 2 loop and two 1 loops.
4) Perform one iteration of the Gilbertese movement, but instead of transferring the large 2345 loop to 1, just release 234 and leave it on 5.
5) Pass 5 loop down through 2, and return, as follows: Transfer 5 loop to 2; insert 1 from below into both 2 loops; release 2 from upper loop; bring 1, with new loop, down out of 2 loop and transfer upper 1 loop to 5 (under remaining 2 loop).
6) Transfer 5 loop to 1, passing 1 over 2 loop and inserting from above.
7) Gilbertese Extension.
Variation: For a 4-diamond figure, give 1 a full twist toward you between steps 6 and 7.

Infinity Symbol and Two Flatworms: A two-part series
March 13, 2004
1) Place loop around wrists.
2) With the opposite hand, wrap the near string of the wrist loop around each hand once.
3) R2 picks up left wrist string, then L2 enters R2 loop from above and gets right wrist string.
4) 1 enters 2 loop from above and returns with transverse far wrist string.
5) 5 enters 2 loop from above and returns with transverse near wrist string.
6) With the opposite hand, take both wrist loops off.
7) Give 1 loop a half-twist away from you by transferring 1 loop to 2 from above, then upper 2 loop to 1 from below.
8) 1, over 2 loop, gets 5N.
9) Caroline Extension: this yields "Infinity Symbol."
10) Return to position at step 8 (before extension), releasing both 2 loops.
11) Caroline Extension: you now have "Two Flatworms." You may have to arrange the center a little. The two flatworms, probably Planarians, are touching the tip of each other's head in the center.

Hold the strings very loose during the following steps.
8) Transfer 3 loop to 2, inserting 2 from above.
Perform the Banaban or Eongatubabo movement as follows:
9) 1 hooks down 1F and 2N.
10) 2 enters 5 loop from above, pulling 5N and 2F towards you past 1N. It then gets 1N, pulling it away from you and straightening. Keep 1 hooked down.
11) 1 gets 5F under 2 loops and through its old loops.
12) Release 5.
13) Transfer upper 2 loop to 5, inserting 5 from above.
14) Release 2 loop.
15) Caroline Ending.
N.B.: This figure usually needs some arranging by a second party to really appreciate the four delicate "petals" of the central design, flanked by two bold diamonds.

Sea Star
A Radially Symmetrical String Figure la Nauru
Quentin Read
April 1, 2004
1) Nauru Opening II.
2) Give 4 loop a half-twist away from you.
3) Pass mouth away over 1N and under all other strings; bite 5F and return mouth to original position, releasing 5. There should be a half-twist that creates a small mouth-loop.
4) Insert 4 toward you into small mouth-loop and return to original position, releasing mouth.
5) Pass upper 4 loop down through lower 4 loop and onto 5 as follows: Pass 1 under 2 and 3 loops and, from below, into both 4 loops; release upper loop from 4; pass 1 back down through lower 4 loop with the former upper 4 loop; without returning 1 to original position, transfer upper 1 loop to 5; return 1 to original position.
6) Pass 1 loop up through 3 loop and onto 2 as follows. Pass 1 over 2 loop and get 3N; 2 gets lower 1F from below; release both 1 loops.
7) Pass upper 2 loop down through lower 2 loop and onto 1 as follows: Pass 1, from below, into both 2 loops; release upper loop from 2; pass 1 back down through lower 2 loop with the former upper 2 loop; return 1 to original position.
8) Release 2 and 4.
9) Transfer 3 loop to 2 from below.
10) Give 2 loop a full twist away from you.
11) Small Amwangiyo.

Triple Fancy Diamonds with Double Frame
Invented April 2004
1) Opening A.
2) 1, through 2 loop from above, gets 5N.
3) 5, through 2 loop from below, gets lower 1F.
4) Release 2.
5) Give figure a 90-degree counterclockwise rotation in the horizontal plane as follows: Transfer R1 loops to R2; transfer L1 loops to R1; transfer L5 loops to L1; transfer R5 loops to L2.
You now have the "Cat's Eye" pattern from the ubiquitous Cat's Cradle series.
6) Insert 5 from below into 2 loop, over 2N, and from below into 1 loop, returning with 1F.
7) 5 hooks down double 2F, bringing it back through its own old loop.
8) Insert 3 into 2 loop from above near the center of the figure, under 2N, over 1N, and into 1 loop from the near side and from below. Straighten 3 away from you and up with 1N.
9) Release 1 and 2.
10) Insert 1 into 5 loop from above (distally and away from you) and return with both outer strings of the side diamond.
11) Release 2.
12) Remove 5 from its loop and reinsert from the opposite side.
13) Caroline Extension with double far thumb strings. Release 1 if desired.
To return to Cat's Eye, do as follows: Lay figure flat, releasing all fingers; insert 1 from below on either side of central diamond closer to you, and 2 from below on either side farther from you; extend.

Seascape
Invented April 19, 2004
1) Opening A.
2) 1, through 2 loop from above, gets 5N.
3) 5, through 1 loop from above, gets lower 1F.
4) Insert 1 and 5 from below into 2 loop. Keep this loop near fingertips.
5) Release 2.
6) Insert R1 and R2 into L5 loops from above; grasp lowest transverse L5F string; remove L5 from all loops; insert L5 from below into loop held by R1 and R2; release R1 and R2.
7) Insert R1 and R2 into L1 loops from above; grasp lowest transverse L1N string; remove L1 from all loops; insert L1 from below into loop held by R1 and R2; release R1 and R2.
8) Repeat 6-7, exchanging L for R and vice versa.
9) Transfer 1 loop to 2, inserting 2 from above.
10) Pass 1 under 2 loop, insert into 5 loop from below, and return with 5N; insert 1 into 2 loop from below, and return with 2N.
11) Release 2.
12) Caroline Extension.
The resultant figure looks like two fish, hence the name Seascape.

2) Transfer 1 loop to 2.
3) 1, under all strings, gets 5F.
4) 1, over 2N, gets 2F.
5) Release 5.
6) 5, over 2 and 3 loops, gets lower 1F.
7) Release 1.
8) 1, over 2 and 3 loops, gets 5N.
