“Q’s Diamond” (the same as “Sun”) invented 1999 1) Opening A. 2) Insert 3 from below into 2 loops. Pinch 1N from above between 2 and 3, twisting up and away through the old 2 loops to create a new 2 loop. 3) 1s hook down on their own 1F string, then go under all other strings to draw 5F through their old loops. 4) Release 5s and extend gently. NB: Originally, the figure ended here, but it can be displayed better with the Caroline Extension as follows: 5) 345 go under 2 loops and enter 1 loop from below. Hook 1N to the palm and release 1s. 6) 1s go under 2 loops and get 3N and, as they return, 2F. 7) Release 2 loops. 8) Remove 5 from its loop and reset it from below; release 3 and 4. 9) Caroline Extension. VARIATIONS (2000-2002?) “Pavilion” Method 1: 1) Opening A. 2) Put 2 loops high on fingers. 2 enters 5 loop from above, rotates toward you and up, then enters 1 loop from below. The original 2 loop should still be the topmost loop. 3) Transfer upper 2 loop to 3 from below. 4) Release all 2 loops and transfer 3 loop to 2 from below. 5) “Q’s Diamond” steps 2-9. Method 2: 1) Place loop on 1s. 2) Put 2s into 1 loops from above and twist them up and away from you to make the 1F string into a 2N string. 3) 5s get 2N. 4) Exchange 2 loops from above, right through left. 5) “Q’s Diamond” steps 2-9. “Monarch Butterfly” (This figure can be extended with the Caroline Extension for a more geometric pattern. To maintain a greater resemblance to a butterfly, do not use the extension.) Identical to “Pavilion” Method 1 except that 2 does not enter 1 loop during step 2. Advanced Variations 2002 Sweet Pattern #1 1) Opening A. 2) Twist 2s away from you over both strings of 5 loops, back toward you under 5 and 1 loops, then back up to their normal position. 3) 1s get 2N. 4) Release 2s. 5) Transfer upper 1 loop to 2s from below. 6) “Open The Gate” steps 2-10 (this can be found in Gryski’s “Many Stars.”) Sweet Pattern #2 1) “Sweet Pattern #1" steps 1-5. 2) “Four Stars of Itai Leaves and Their Well” steps 5-14 (Gryski’s “Super String Games.”) 3) “Q’s Diamond” steps 2-9. Vampire Bat 1) Opening A. 2) “Four Stars of Itai Leaves and Their Well” steps 5-14 (Gryski’s “Super String Games.”) 3) “Q’s Diamond” steps 2-9. “Stained-Glass Window” invented 2001? 1) Steps 1-4 of Pavilion, Method 2. 2) 1s, over 2 loops, get 5N. 3) 5s, over 2 loops, get 1F. 4) Exchange 2 loops from above, right through left. 5) Insert 3s from below into 2 loops, and then 2 and 3 from above into 1 loops. 2s push up non-transverse 1N on their backs, then pinch transverse 1N between 2 and 3, twisting it up and away back through the old 2 loops to form new 2 loops. 6) Release 1s and arrange central figure to form a triple diamond with a double cross in the center. “Tent” (a 3-D figure) invented 2001/2? 1) Opening A. 2) Release 5s. 3) 5s, over 2 loops, get 1F. 4) Without releasing their old loops, 5s, over 2F, get 2N. 5) Without releasing their old loops, 1s get 2F. 6) Exchange 2 loops from above, right through left. 7) Insert 3s from below into 2 loops, and then 2 and 3 from above into 1 loops. Pinch double 1N between 2 and 3, twisting it up and away back through the old 2 loops to form new 2 loops. 8) Release 1s. 9) The 2 loop is crossed by a near and far diagonal. Insert 1s into 2 loops from below and hook down near diagonal, bringing it below all other strings and then getting double 5F, drawing it through the 1 loops. 10) Flip the 2 loops by inserting 3 from above into 2 loops, getting 2N, and releasing 2s. “Flying Saucer” 2002/3? 1) Opening A. 2) 2s go down into 5 loops, hooking 5N. 3) 1s go under 2N strings and get 2F (originally 2N). 4) Release 2s. 5) 2s hook 5N from above, then draw it toward you and insert 2s from above into 1 loops. Twist 2s up and away to put double 1F onto 2s through 5 loops. 6) 1s hook down on their own non-transverse near string so that the transverse near string slips off (self-Navajo). 7) 1s hook down former 1N string and get 5F under all other strings, drawing it through old loop. 8) Release 5s. 9) “Q’s Diamond”steps 5-9, treating doubled 2 loop as one loop. “Frog” and “Unconscious Penguin” Series invented 1999 Frog: 1) Opening B. 2) 5s go over 2 loops and get 1F. 3) 2s hook down the strings that cross their loops. The old index loop flips over to the back but stays as a dorsal string. 4) R3 gets the L2 dorsal string. 5) L3 goes over both strings of the R3 loop and gets the R2 dorsal string. 6) Release 2s. 7) 2s enter 3 loop from below, then 2 and 3 pinch 1N from above. Twist this string onto 2s through their old loops. 8) Release 1s. Unconscious Penguin: 9) Transfer 2 loops to 1s from below. 10) In the center of the 1N string there is a large triangle wrapped around it. Insert 2s from above into the triangle. Each 2 hooks up the 1N string on its respective side and twists back up through the triangle, forming a new loop from the 1N string. 11) Release 1s. Horned Demon invented around 2001 1) Opening A. 2) 1, over 2 loops, gets 5N. 3) 5, over 2 loops, gets 1F. 4) Exchange 2 loops from above, passing right loop through left. 5) Insert 3 from below into 2 loops; put 2 and 3 from above into upper 1 loop. Pull up upper 1N with 2, pinch transverse lower 1N between 2 and 3, and twist it up through old 2 loops and onto 2. 6) Release 1 loops and extend with hands pointed away from you. 7) Four loops go around the 2N string. Two are closer to the 2 fingers and the other two are closer to the center. Insert each 1 between the inner and outer loops, pushing both strings of the outer loops further out. Then 1 gets the 2F string and draws it out between the two loops. 8) Release 2 loops. To “chop off his horns”: 9) Insert 2 into the spaces between the head and the horns, release 1, and extend. The horns hang limply. Four-Part Series December 11, 2003 1) Make “The Well.” (Jayne pp. 85-87) 2) Release 1s and let their loop hang down. Do not extend. Put 1s away from you into the triangle formed by the hanging loop and the top transverse string. Move them downward and away from one another to hook both strings of the hanging loop, front and back. 1s then get lower 2N on their backs and draw it through the hanging loop strings. 3) Insert 5 into 1 loop from below and hook it down to the palm along with the other two 5 loops. Release 1s. 4) 1s get the transverse 2N on the side closer to the finger than the loops that wrap around it. Release 2s to form “Two Titties.” Point hands away to extend, and move 1s back and forth to make them dance! 5) Two of the 5F strings are transverse while one is not. Put 2s into 5 loops from the proximal side and on the near side of the non-transverse string. Hook the two transverse strings and draw them through the 5 loops, releasing 5s. Turn palms away and out to display a figure variously known as “Bungalow” or “Giant Spider Being.” 6) 5s enter from below the 2 loops on the near side of the palmar string (into the lozenges) and take up the 1N string close to the 1s, drawing it back through the lozenges. Release 1s to extend “Chomolungma* In All Its Majesty.” For a better extension, 1s can pull up the 2F string to shorten it. 7) Put 1s away from you into the triangular spaces on either side of Chomolungma’s peak. Release 2s. 8) 2s get 1N from above. Turn palms away and out, keeping top and bottom transverse strings tight, to extend “The Scarlet Letter: A Timeless American Classic.” * Chomolungma = Everest House of the Rising Sun December 28, 2003 1) Opening A. 2) Transfer 5 to 3 from below. 3) L5 hooks L3F and twists up and away. Share L5 loop with R5. 4) 2345 enter 1 loop from below, slipping this loop down to the wrists. 5) 1 enters 2 from above and gets near wrist string. (You will need to use other fingers to help push the wrist string up and the 2 loops down.) 6) Transfer 1 to 5 from above. 7) Without losing wrist loop, 1 goes under 2 and 3 loops and enters 5 loop from below. It gets upper 5F and returns. 8) Release upper 5 loop. 9) Remove wrist loops. 10) 1, over intervening strings, gets 5N. 11) 5, over intervening strings, gets 1F. 12) 2 and 3 hook down their own double palmar strings, letting their old loops slip off. Release 1 and 5. 13) Extend by transferring 2 to 1 and 3 to 5, pointing hands away from you.
