THE MAGIC OF MASTERMINDING

By: M. J. Jacobson

Carmen has been carrying around her business idea in a box – for months. She told
everyone she knows what a great idea it is, how much she loves it and how successful
she is going to become. But every time she looked at the box she wanted to lie down and have a nap. She was challenged by her group to take the business idea out of the box and take action. Today she is well ahead of schedule, excited and enthusiastic about making her dream come true.

I once had a business coach tell me that all I needed to be successful was to have faith that everything would work out as it should, follow my intuition and ask for help. This was great advice that I follow today. I am still amazed at how things will always work out in the 11th hour. The business development process truly is one part hard work, one part faith and one part magic.

I have been facilitating groups of people for over 20 years. There is nothing quite as magical as the synergy that is created when a group is working in harmony. I presently facilitate a MasterMind group of aspiring millionaires. I am awed every week with the results our group is able to accomplish simply by getting together each week and supporting each other in achieving our goals.

Napoleon Hill first introduced the concept of the MasterMind Group in his book “Think and Grow Rich.” He describes the group as: "The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people who work toward a definite purpose in the spirit of harmony."…"No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind."

The MasterMind Group I am currently facilitating is a group of business professionals who are committed to becoming more successful. They get together and share their hopes, dreams and goals. They brainstorm ideas to help each other become more successful. They encourage each other to be accountable to the goals they have set for themselves. They give feedback and suggest action items that will move them closer to achieving their goals. They are also honest with one other in letting others know what is holding them back. They identify and work through limitations.

My role as the facilitator is to set the tone for the group, clearly define the boundaries and rules and reinforce when necessary. I guide the group through the sessions, keep them on time and track, balance the speaking time, provide honest feedback when required and requested. I provide exercises and tools to help the members of the group break through the barriers to success. I lead by example in challenging others to look past their own four walls and see what is possible.

Tips for joining or creating a MasterMind group

There are two styles of MasterMind Group: facilitated and non-facilitated. They also can be fee based or no cost. Many MasterMind Groups are for certain business groups i.e. lawyers, real estate agents or small business owners. The type and style you choose is really a personal preference based on your current needs. In addition, MasterMind Group topics can be very general in nature or very specific. For example, the group I am currently facilitating are all working towards becoming millionaires.
