Name
Kathleen Huggins, though I go by Kat and Kate depending on mood.
Age
22! Still young, but old enough to be the creepy chick at the all ages concerts.
How long have you been passionate about art?
Originally I wanted to be a writer, actually. I still write, but what turned me to illustration was the comic book Kabuki by David Mack.
What other forms of art do you dabble in?
Much of my current work has been painting with acrylic on canvas, though now Ive found India ink on canvas. I love watercolors and guache effects with heavy ink lines. Very illustrational. I still take a lot of influence from comic books. My best sellers have actually been my plaster masks. I also sew and design hand-bags, and create graphics for websites. Recently Ive toyed with the idea of jewelry art. Oh, and photography. I really love taking snap shots.
Greatest artistic achievement?
My greatest artistic achievement probably hasnt happened yet. Right now, its simply not giving up. Id like to believe that I can always get better, and after eight years of trying to be, hopefully the progress is evident.
Educational background?
I started high school at Valhalla High in Rancho San Diego. For freshman and sophomore year I took automotive design under an ex-exec of GM motors. Also, I took a marketing class. I left two years early to attend Grossmont Middle College High School where I took figure drawing, drafting, and sculpture.
What kind of tools do you use to create your art?
Anything. Whatevers necessary, or available, or even just interesting. I do most of my sketches by hand, and for digital art I use Adobe Photoshop. Ive used oil paints, acrylic paints, water color, guache, India ink, felt tip, brush tip, marker, pastel, pencil, plaster, string, cloth, paper mache, photography, sticks, twigs and leaves. Art isnt defined by its media, but the end result. How you got there should always be second to what youve made. Unless you hurt somebody to make it, thats just not cool or legal.
Musical influences?
I was brought up with Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. Im also a fan of Bjork, Portishead, Daft Punk, and Imogen Heap. Artistically, those are my influences. Music for music sake is probably just good old ska, punk and grunge.
How would you describe your style?
Detail oriented. Its always the little things that take the longest, but theyre always worth it. I try to keep my art very clean and bold. Often times I limit my colors to primaries. I am an illustrator at heart, so thats probably the best word for what I do.
Would you consider yourself more of a nerd or a geek, and why?
Geek! Well, maybe a splash of nerd, but Im not that good at math. Im a geek. Ive done every un-cool thing you can imagine. Ive played D&D (Bards unite!), IRCRPGs, MMOs (Hellscream unite?), MUDs, PBeMs - you name it, Ive taken over the system, turned it inside out, and kicked everyones butt. Except LARPing, havent actually done that I also play MTG at a local card shop; I think that the Rebel Forces were terrorists; FF7 is not the best in the series; and Deadpool should never have his mouth sewn shut. All hail Cobra!
