The Doug Anthony Allstars
(also quite affectionately referred to as D*A*A*S, the Doug’s or the Allstars) were a comedy trio that hit the scenes and rocked the world in the mid-80’s, their reign coming to an end in 1994, their last concert being December 18th 1994. The trio consisted of Tim Ferguson, Richard Fidler and Paul McDermott, who’s tasteless, funny and quite creative antics, disgusted the older generations, whilst sending everyone else with any sense (and taste for that matter) into an obsessed frenzy that still carries on to this day, we being proof of that.
These three sexy and of course talented fellas, coerced audiences both in Australia and overseas, performing live, giving TV appearances, releasing videos, CDs, comics and books, even delving into a bit of journalism, taking their vocation to almost every medium possible to establish the huge following that they did indeed acquired.
Their shows consisted of them performing lewd and humorous songs -plus a few ‘tasteful’ ditties thrown in to please the prudes of the universe- nearly all of which were written exclusively by them plus a few comedy routines that would have audiences in stiches for ages. In fact, we’re still laughing.
 Tim
Timothy Dawson Langbene Ferguson was one of the original members of D*A*A*S was born on November 18th, 1963 and raised in as part of the Canberra middle class. His lack of attention and disinterest in learning throughout high school lead him to dismiss the idea of attending university and instead, attended Duntroon Military College in our countries fair (and all too bloody organised and symmetrical) capital where he earned the rank of captain before leaving.
Tim met Richard at the Australian National Uni where he often practiced political soapbox preaching and where Fidler was studying Political Sciences. The two hit it off and started a ‘band’ along with another guy, Robert Piper who left soon after to go to Paris to do something with a flute (gotta love our wording *g*).As a Doug, Tim’s stage persona was the beautiful, handsome, sexy guy that seems to have followed him into his everyday activities. He really is one gorgeous bloke.
Tim married during his run as an Allstar and is now the father of three and after the break up of the Dougs *sniff* he found the time to write a book, ‘Left, Right and Centre’ as well as drifting from network to network, staring and hosting various TV shows, such as Little Aussie Battlers (had a very short run), Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush and most recently, Unreal TV. He also scored the role of Frank ‘n’ Furter, the tranny scientist, in the ‘98(?) Australian stage production of the hit musical ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and boy did he look hot in those fishnets!
Rich
Richard Fidler was born in England in 1963(?) , moving to Doncaster (a Melb. Suburb), Australia with his family at the age of one. He moved to Canberra during his teens then attended ANU as a political science student, coming out of it at the end with his Masters in this area.
Being quite an avid musician, it didn’t take long for Richard to become ‘the band’ of the Doug Anthony Allstars, providing most of the accompaniment for their songs with his guitar. His Allstar persona was always the victim, begin picked on my either Paul or Tim or both at once giving him the cute, vulnerable personality that we all fell in love with.
Since his D*A*A*S days, Rich has married Kyhm Lam (the newsreader from one of the trio’s TV shows, D*A*A*S Kapital, who has also appeared in the Henderson Kids and more recently a weet-bix ad) and they now have a son. He also hosted the PayTV show, Mouthing Off, the ABC’s Race Around the World as hosts Cosmopolitan radio on Suday nights for 2day FM, Sydney and The Fox FM, Melbourne.
Richard is now a multimedia director and graphic artist and
animator. He has worked on the development of several
CD-ROM projects both in Australia and in the UK, as well as
on prototypes for Japanese manga CD-ROMs 3 x 3 Eyes and
Crying Freeman. In 1995 he created The Third Vision, a short
QuickTime movie for New Vision Media, UK using Macintosh
based 3D animation software. Go Richy boy!
Paul
Paul Anthony McDermott was born the youngest twin(not identical, the other one was female, her name is Sharon) to a Catholic couple on Mothers day, 1962, which was May 13th, in Adelaide . The twins were the eldest of six children.
The McDermott family moved to Canberra when Paul was three (poor thing, to be subject to such cruelties as a move to Canberra at such a young age *shakes head* Oh the humanity!)
Paul attended a Private Catholic Boy’s school in Canberra (doesn’t say much for the Catholic education system eh?) and then went off to study fine arts at uni.
Paul met Richard through a performance group he was part of and soon took Robert’s place as the third and final Allstar. He spent many of his D*A*A*S days, apologising to fans for his noxious aroma as he crowd surfed. At this point in his life, hygiene was not really an issue.
McDermott wrote most lyrics to the Allstars songs as well as painting back drops and props, and taking a large part in the illustration of their merchandise. He was the short, evil one of the three, taking a lot of his ‘anger’ out on poor old Rich, but always getting a good old laugh from the audience because of it.
When the Allstars were no more, Paul wrote and performed a musical called MOSH which one him awards at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. It also appeared at the 1995 Melbourne Comedy Festival. From there, Paul became the host of the ABC’s new satirical game show, Good News Week which has now moved to channel ten (dammit!).
He has also appeared on radio, namely JJJ’s breakfast program with Mikey Robins(fellow GNW member) with whom he co-wrote and ‘performed’ the radio serial ‘Captain Pants’ along with Steven ‘the Sandman’ Abbott.
Paul also writes a fortnightly article for the Australian Weekend Magazine.
