Quantrill reburial at Higginsville, Missouri

Scenes
From the 1992
reburial

The Missouri Partisan Ranger  web-site gave us the following information about the 1992 reinterment thanks to Russ Lenzini.
W.C. Quantrill was killed in 1865. Trapped in a barn at Wakefield farm, about a mile from Smiley, Kentucky by Captain Edward Terrell and his cavalry detachment.
While attempting to escape he was struck by two Spencer balls, one in the hand, the other paralyzing him from the waist down. He was tranferred to a military hospital in Louisville, then to a Catholic hospital in Louisville. He died there June 6th, 1865.
He was buried in the old Portland Catholic Cemetery in Louisville
.

In 1887 his mother had his bones brought back to Ohio. The man she paid to remove the body stole some of the skeleton, and years later, some of it showed up in the hands of a Kansas collector.
Eventually these parts were moved to the Old Confederate Veterans Home and Cemetery at Higginsville, Mo.
On October 24th, 1992 William C. Quantrill was reinterred in the Old Confederates Home and Cemetery with the full Confederate honors due him by the Missouri Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The flag shown was laid across his casket, and was not removed until his remains were lowered into the ground for eternity.

May He Rest In Peace!!!
