Notes:
- When describing features of a data set, the sample mean (also called the arithmetic mean) is used as a measure of central tendency for a data distribution which is not highly skewed, provided extreme values are not present.
- When making statistical inference, the sample mean is often used as a point estimator of a population mean or the mean of a probability distribution. This application of the sample mean may be justified on grounds that it is an unbiased and consistent estimator.
