Brief History after leaving QES: I have been a civil servant for 38 years now. According to the regulations, I should have retired in August 2003 after reaching the age of 55, the age of retirement for officers on the Old Pension Scheme (those on New Pension Scheme may choose to retire at 60). However, since I have joined the ICAC two years ago on agreement terms (as opposed to pensionable terms under the Pensions Ordinance), I can continue working in the ICAC beyond the age of 55. I shall be completing my service agreement in mid-2004. In view of the current stringent situation, and the tremendous workload resultant from the reduction in size of government departments, I have decided that the sooner they can find a replacement, the sooner I shall leave the job. I am very much eager to join the team of retirees, to sit back and relax. I have been very lucky to have two sons who have aspired to careers of their choice and interest. My elder son Jonathan is a computer hardware engineer designing programmable chips in the Silicon Valley, namely, San Jose near San Francisco. He earns much more than me and has settled down rather well there. My second son Jerry completed his apprenticeship and has worked as a barrister for two years. While I have been a civil servant for 38 years, I am not much of the "yours obedient servant" type. I had been a unionist for 14 years, as executive committee member of the Executive Officer Grade Association, 4 of which as chairman. Besides my civil servant career, I invested in a side business of manufacturing lingerie -- which is more talked about as "ladies' fundamental garment" in the trade. This investment has developed quite well and I get more satisfaction from it than my full time job in the civil service. Of course, there have been good times and bad times in all these years. However, all these will turn to history by the middle of year 2004 when I’ll get prepared for the retirement lifestyle.
