Appearance
Vells average about 4'9" tall and have average weight for their strength. They have uniformly pale coloring, and actually suffer from prolonged exposure to sunlight. Thus, most vells go heavily cloaked when outdoors during the daytime. Apart from their coloring, Vells look like abnormally short humans.
Names
Vell names follow a standard form, with a given name followed by a family name. Common given names are Gimmel, Freck, Tibble, and Rillan. Family names could be anything from the given name of a particularly famous ancestor to a discriptive of such an ancestor (especially if it applies to the decendant as well) or the place where they lived etc. Some examples are Gimmel Tolluck, Tibble Rednose, or Freck Bywater.
Culture
Vell communities are often well-planned airy caverns magically shaped from the bedrock. Each community is ruled by a council which has equal authority to the council of any other Vell town. This leads to a tendancy for it to take quite some time before decisions are reached on a 'national' scale, though individual communities may take any appropriate action well before the majority decides on a course.
Traditionally, Vellish children are the center of the community, representing the future of the race. Nearly every adult in the community spends some time in communal child-care and education.
