| The King's Necklace An Example of Enchantment in the World of Ea |
||||||||||
| Alock the Enchanter runs a circle of 6 professional enchanters. All have Magery 3 and 3 levels of Increased Thresh. Alock also posesses two levels of Safer Excess. One of Alocks specialties is a necklace that allows the wearer to breathe water. He sells quite a few, as his market is in a coastal city that thrives on its oyster farms. Unfortunately, Alock has found his stock to be abysmally low, and the King has come visiting! Rumor is that the King wants to use one of Alocks necklaces to examine his Royal oyster beds. Alock quickly gathers his fellows and explains the problem. They agree they should immediately get to work creating a necklace for the King. Alock fetches a twenty point powerstone from his collection. Its actually a 30 kt aquamarine, and should look quite nice in a necklace he has been working on for the head of a local merchant house. Alock rolls against his Jeweler skill and sets the stone. It will become an exclusive powerstone providing 60 pts of energy for the item. If the casting works, the King will be able to stay under water for almost 30 minutes. Alock rejoins his fellows and gets to work. This is a Quick and Dirty enchantment, with Alock leading. His skill in Enchant is 22, and his skill in Breathe Water is 21. He will be at -5 for his companions and a further -1 for exceeding his Thresh. This is necessary because an item with Breathe Water costs 400 energy, and his circle only has 384 pts available. Alock will have to exceed his Thresh by 16 points. Luckily, he will not have modifiers to his Calamity Roll, as his safe level ofExcess is 20 pts. Alock will be the only one to draw past his Thresh, so as to reduce the risk of Calamity. Four hours later (this is the minimum), Alock rolls against his modified skill of 15. He makes a 14. A little too close for comfort, but sufficient. He also rolls on the Calamity Table, rolling a 9. He got lucky, no ill effects this time. The King should be delighted at his new magic item, a beautiful necklace allowing him to breathe water for 29 minutes. Alock admires the necklace as he sends a servant to answer the insistant knocking on the door.... If Alock and his companions used the Slow and Sure method to create the Kings necklace, it would have taken 400/6 = 66.67 days to complete. This would be rounded up to 67 days. With a few months notice, this would have been possible, there would be no risk of Calamity, and the items Power would be 16 instead of 15 (Alock would not have needed to exceed his Thresh). It would probably be more economical to use the QnD method to produce these fairly low-cost items, as each Mage would be likely to recover in about 10 days with their RR of 2d+2, making it possible to produce 6 necklaces in the same time. If each used an 8 point powerstone to reduce the cost to their Tally, they could reduce the excess down to 4 points (16-[2pts x number of mages]). If larger powerstones were available, there may have been no excess at all, but the stones could not recharge in the ten days between castings. If Alocks apprentice learned the Enchant and Breathe Water spells at level 15, he could join the circle, and these necklaces could be cast with no risk of Calamity and power 15 (Alocks skill with Breathe Water at 21 - 6 for companions). |
