Half-breeds During the Time of Empire, Grollucks took their pleasure from any non-Grolluck slave whenever they wished, producing several half-breed races. Grolluck half-breeds are among the most common of Ea. Grolls, a vile mixture of Orc and Grolluck, give the Orcish hordes a source of elite shock troops. Ur-Grollucks, adding a human element to the Grolluck mix, remain common throughout human and Grolluck lands. There are accounts of other Grolluck half-breeds (including a Grolluck/Bentyr mix), but these strains have not survived into the current time.
Appearance Grollucks are tall, thick-limbed and thick-skinned humanoids. Their skin is a uniform blueish cast darkening to purple around the eyes, nose and mouth. Hair is a wiry black and is usually worn in a long braid by males and females alike. Eyes can be of any color, but are predominantly dark. When a Grolluck is actually seen outside his heavy armor, his clothing is normally nondescript and utilitarian. This is normally a one-piece garment of thick cloth in shades of grey and/or brown. No Grolluck goes anywhere without a weapon.
Names Grolluck personal names consist of a given name followed by the names of a Grollucks clan and sept. A given name may be changed at any time, clan names are permanent, and sept names are permanent after a Grolluck has been accepted into his sept. Brin o Calor i Marq states that Brin is a member of the Clan of Calor, and the Sept of Marq. Clans are named for the First Warriors. Some twenty clans survived the Time of Empire. Sept names are derived from the Founding Warriors of each clan. Usually there are five or six septs per clan.
Culture The Grolluck people are divided into huge clans. Each Clan Lord is responsible for his people, their lands, and relations with other clans. Each Clan Lord owes a fuedal allegiance to the First Lord, Clan Lord of the Clan of Mishka. Mishka has been the First Clan for all of recorded history, and was the source of the Grolluck Emperors in the Time of Empire. Each clan is divided into Septs. A sept is a brotherhood of warriors within a clan. Each sept is named for a Founding Warrior of the Clan. Septs fight as a unit, and are usually fielded as the equivilant of a Company. Clans, organized along Sept lines, is usually fielded in Battalion strength. Since both male and female Grolluck fight as warriors, Grollucks are capable of fielding a huge force. As yet, however, they are not yet powerful enough to again sweep aside the assembled armies of Ea. Disputes between individuals, septs, and clans are all solved with trial by combat. Individual combats usually do not end in death, but sept and clan disputes are often fatal. Any insult may result in challenge to Trial. The few outsiders who travel in the Grolluck lands are well advised to be exceedingly polite. It is said that a Grolluck is born with a weapon in hand. This is not quite accurate, but not far from the truth. Grolluck children are expected to begin weapon training early on, and must gain acceptance into a sept by defeating a sept member in single combat. |
