Ban Ti History

In the time of the Great War, the Ban Ti people were very different from their
modern day progeny. In this time, they were known as the Lakami. The AkMilar Waste
was, at this time, a lush and prosperous land. The Lakami were a wealthy, city-dwelling
people. Their leader was the Barakas. He was believed by the Lakami to be a good man
who worked for the greatness of the Creator. In truth, Barakas was Defiler-sworn long
before he rose to the leadership of his people.
One by one, Barakas surrendered the souls of his fellow Lakami clerics to his
Master, blaming their deaths on the actions of the Defiler-sworn hiding among the
populace. His people, trusting in his guidance, never questioned his words, and so
unknowingly tred foward to the disaster that he was to unleash.
Barakas was rated very highly in the Defilers favor. It was his task to find a way
to unleash the Defiler upon the world of the living. After stealing the power of his fellows,
and many years of experiments and research, he found a way. In a ceremony lasting seven
days, requiring the sacrifice of seven virgins, Barakas finally opened a gateway to the
underworld. It was only through the action of the Hero Celion and the Sword of Power
that the world was saved from the Defilers rule.
Celion had long been suspicious of Barakas. The deaths of the clerics of the
Lakami puzzled him. It was, after all, his focus in life to use the Sword of Power to hunt
the Defiler-sworn and their minions. He knew that there had been very little action by the
Defilers minions in the Lakamis lands. He also knew of no way that clerics would simply
drop dead. It was by this reasoning that Celion decided to investigate Barakas actions.
Celion travelled to the Lakamis capital city to learn what he could.
Under an assumed identity of a mercenary, Celion penetrated Barakas High
Guard. Through his proximity to the cleric, Celion learned the terrible truth only hours
before the completion of the ritual to release the Defiler. Celion fought his way through
the High Guard, the Sword of Power ringing with his purpose. He burst into Barakas
inner sanctum just as the man completed his last spell.
The bodies of the seven virgins littered the floor, ensconced in ritual patterns of
power. Barakas stood before the gateway just then opening into the depths of the
underworld. Celion could see the baleful glare of the Defiler through the gate. Though
staggered under numerous wounds, Celion kissed the blade of the Sword of Power,
bidding it to be true, and hurled the wizard-forged blade through the air. Barakas knew
nothing of the presence of the hero until the Sword of Power pierced his back. As he
stood staring down at the foot of steel protruding from his chest, his final spell began to
collapse.
With a roar of impotent rage, for the portal to the world of life was too small for
him still, the Defiler unleashed his power through the gate and sent his minions through in
a mad rush. Thousands of creatures from the underworld flew through the gate as the
Defilers power scorched the land to the boundaries of what was to be known as the
AkMilar Waste. The outpouring of power and twisted mockeries of life lasted only two
minutes. Celion took up the Sword of Power and fought valiantly against those minions of
darkness that took notice of him. Though he fought with all the righteous fury of a servant
of the Creator, he was mortally wounded before the Defilers creatures left him for dead
and turned their attention towards the peaceful Lakami.
The Lakami found themselves embroiled in a battle to the death with thousands of
the Defilers servants. The Lakami took up weapons, grabbed their young, and fought a
running battle away from the center of their devastated land. Most of the Lakami died
either in the battle or from starvation in their once fertile land. Thousands of the creatures
of the underworld also survived to claim the Waste for their Master.
Years later, the Lakami, now hardened warriors, sent a party of fighters to what
had once been the capital of their land. They found the body of Celion, surrounded by the
remains of twisted creatures, still lying in the inner sanctum of Barakas perfectly preserved
by the dry, blighted weather of the Waste. His hand still grasped the hilt of the Sword of
Power. Close by his other hand, written in his own blood upon the floor, was the truth of
Barakas power and goals. The Lakami, though they had wondered, and guessed, were
still horrified by the truth. The party of Lakami buried Celion as well as all their own dead
they could find, took the Sword of Power, and left the Waste to return to the rest of their
people.
Once reunited with their people, they related the story of Barakas treachery, as
they had read in Celions blood. All the surviving Lakami were equally horrified by the
tale. As one, they resolved to forever serve the Creator, to be His earthly Sword against
the minions of the Defiler. They chose to call themselves the Ban Ti, meaning Fallen
Children, and they named what had been their land AkMilar. For the Place of Penance.
The Ban Ti dedicated themselves to learning the arts of combat, and soon took to
venturing into the waste to hunt and kill the minions of the Defiler still there. Before long,
the Ban Ti travelled to other parts of the world to fight Defiler-sworn. They were a feared
force for the light until long after the Great War ended.
After the War, the Ban Ti turned their attention towards the Waste. Nearly every
wizard born to the Ban Ti has used his power to attempt to reverse the damage to their
land. Slowly the fringes of the Waste were made able to support life again. Today, much
of the Waste is habitable, though many areas are still barren and minions of the Dark One
still roam parts of the land. Here the Ban Ti live and continue to prepare for the next time
their service is needed by those who love the Creator.
