EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK:
Want a taste of what's in the "Girls Make a Difference" book? Here's a small sample from one chapter:
Living In the World Being the center of the universe is more than feeling good about yourself; it's also about feeling good about the world around you.
Have you ever heard the saying that anything you do doesn't just affect you but also those around you? It's true. Any action you take (or don't take) can affect many people in many ways many you may not even realize.
The world around you is a pretty amazing place. Sometimes we get wrapped up in our own activities and our lives. We get a form of tunnel vision in which we may only see our own personal problems and concerns. This isn't a completely terrible thing; were human. That's the way we generally see things, especially when were busy and consumed by our many projects.
We need to keep in mind that there is a world around us and that there are bigger issues at stake. For example, if you drink a lot of canned beverages every day and do not recycle, you're throwing a lot of recyclable materials into the garbage. You may only be one person, but the amount of aluminum cans you throw away in a lifetime would probably amaze you. Your action = tossing aluminum cans; the effect = landfills fill up with garbage.
With that thought in mind, take your actions on a more personal level. Maybe you're joking around with your classmates. Perhaps you're teasing the kid that sits in front of you in class for one reason or another. At the time you may think its harmless fun. But what if you were on the receiving end of the teasing? How would you like it? The kid may act like he's ignoring you at the time, but inside he probably feels humiliated. It may affect him so much that he starts worrying more about being the class joke than about his homework. For some reason, teasing somebody is very catching. It seems like everyone wants to get in on it. You know why? Because they don't want to be the ones who are teased |
