Ricky Williams Walks Away from PWFFL [07.25.04] (Chicago, IL) Waiting in the terminal of Chicago's O'Hare Airport one of the best backs in PWFFL history is boarding a plane out of the country. Ricky Williams of the Kalamazoo Vikings recently sent in his papers to the league announcing his retirement. The 27-year old Williams, who accumilated 646 points in his short five year career with the Vikings, failed to give notice to the Kalamazoo franchise before he made his decision. The Miami Herald broke the story when catching the young Williams as he was buying a new stash on a Miami street corner. ``You can't understand how free I feel,'' Williams told the Herald in a cell phone interview Saturday before boarding a plane to Hawaii and heading to Asia to begin several months of travel. "Human beings aren't supposed to be controlled and told what to do. They're supposed to be given direction and a path. Don't tell me what I can and can't do. Please. I had these great visions when I was partying after our Bribin Cup victory. I figured, what a great way to leave, on top with a championship."The retirement really puts the Bribin Cup Champs in a bind, considering they recently traded away Puck Bowl MVP Jamal Lewis to the Detroit Drive earlier in the offseason. They now only have three stable backs on their roster, something that CEO Puck does not feel comfortable with. "We're just going to have to restock and reload in the draft. Ricky has been a great asset to our franchise and we wish him well on his travels. We have been in such position before, when Lewis went down during the 2001 offseason, we will survive again."Drafted in the 9th round of the 1999 draft by the Kalamazoo Vikings, Williams leaves PWFFL ranked 9th on the league's all-time scoring list, 3rd among runningbacks, and first place on Kalamazoo's all-time scoring list. He was one of only five runningbacks in the league to have played in 50 or more games amassing a 12.4 points per game average. |
