Lewis Moves Across Michigan, Vikings Get Green and Picks

[02.29.04] (Detroit, MI) One of the most efficient teams in PWFFL history pulled off a blockbuster trade over the weekend with one of the most dysfunctional. Jamal Lewis is heading from the Puck Bowl Champion Kalamazoo Vikings to the 4-10 Detroit Drive, in exchange for two draft picks and fellow runningback William Green.

The trade comes amid controversy surrounding Lewis's criminal charges related to drug conspiracy, while Green comes off jail time of his own. Meanwhile, Vikings owner Puck gets the Drive's #1 pick in the 2004 PWFFL Draft, which will be the 3rd pick overall, and the Drive's 14th round pick, 159th overall.

"We had to make some tough calls for the 2004 season, and Jamal was unhappy with his position with the Vikings," Puck said in a Sunday morning news conference. "We were able to get a great deal for him and couldn't pass it up. We wish him the best on the Drive."
Lewis will be formally introduced to the Detroit media on Monday. The Drive enter 2004 with a healthy Michael Vick at quarterback, and perhaps the franchise runningback that the team has been looking for for two years.
"Jamal is a welcome addition to the Drive," read a statement from owner Bob Pinter faxed to reporters. "We think he'll take some of the pressure off of Travis [Henry] next year and provide some steady leadership that we may have lacked in '03."
As to Lewis's pending legal problems, Pinter says he isn't worried.
"We'll support Jamal 100 percent. We've had players who have been in trouble before, and we've stuck by them. I'd still rather have Jamal for 12 weeks than most other guys for 16."
Lewis leaves a Vikings team that often didn't have room for him. After predicting that he was going to break the single-season rushing record in Week 2 last year, he was promptly benched. He's expected to see plenty of carries in Detroit, where Travis Henry has led a rotating cast of backs ranging from disappointing LaBrandon Toefield to late-season pickup Najeh Davenport.
