Close Calls, Pitfalls, and Somebody Has To Lose

Week 3: It was almost as if neither team wanted to win.

With fantasy studs Shawn Green and Jason Giambi watching from the bench, pitchers Tony Armas, Jr. and Roy Halladay traded runs back and forth as it looked like Week 3's matchup between the Michigan Twinkies and Seattle Skunks would come down to whoever made the fewest mistakes. In the end, though, it was Craig Biggio who saved a rainy Sunday for the Twinkies, going 3-for-5 to secure a four-point win, the first of the season for Michigan owner/manager Puck.

Meanwhile, a dejected--and still winless--Seattle skipper explained after the game why he decided to waive star shortstop Miguel Tejada earlier this week.

"I got rid of Tejada because I don't feel that he fits into my team. I don't feel that he was performing how he is expected to," Jabin told reporters. "Granted, I don't have the greatest team or anything, but I can survive fine without Tejada."
Ironically, it was Armas--whose poor pitching performance may have cost Seattle the win--whom Quick added to the Skunks' roster in place of Tejada, who's expected to join the Twinkies sometime Wednesday.

Week 4 will pit the winners of the PWFBL's other two games against each other in a battle of the unbeatens. The Wisconsin Wannabees will tangle with the Hummels Wharf Braves in a battle that's already been the product of some heated exchanges between the two managers. One witness says the Braves' Bob Pinter taunted 'Bees owner Sue Conn as the two passed each other in an Oshkosh hotel late Sunday. Neither side had to be restrained.

The Braves, who have averaged more than 300 points in each of the last three weeks, handed Providence its second straight loss. Wisconsin nearly broke the 300 mark themselves en route to a 50-point drubbing of Rocko.

The Wisconsin-Hummels Wharf matchup looks to be the Game of the Week as Michigan tries to win two in a row against the Leopards, while Seattle looks for its first win against the struggling Plague.
