Ass./Surgeon Lyster, Henry F.

HQ

Henty F. Lyster enlisted in Detroit Michigan at the age of 27 as a Surgeon in the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry.

His family was rooted in the Detroit area for most of his life. He was born in Ireland in the late 1830s. His father was the first rector of Old Christ Church in Detroit.

Henry F. Lyster (Francis Le Hunte) stated his home was Detroit when he enlisted at the age of 27. He enlisted on the 25th of April 1861 in Detroit as a Asst. Surgeon.

He was Transferred to the 5th Michigan Infantry and Promoted to Surgeon on the 15th of July 1862.

He became a Brigade Surgeon on the 17th of January 1863.

He was Discharged on the 28th of May 1865.

Following the war, he was a prominent physician in Detroit. There's even a school named after him. Also I believe one or more of his sons also pursued a military career.

In the early part of this century, following his death, his family donated to Old Christ Church a stained glass window which can be viewed at: http://museum.cl.msu.edu/museum/msgc/jul98.htm

The window depicts him and members of his family. So even though I don't have a photo of him, the likenesses in the window were based on photos, so I got some idea of what he and his family looked like. I assume his wife Winifred is one of the women also depicted. Dr. Lyster, also by the way, authored a short book or pamphlet on the Bull Run campaign, which might be worth checking out. I've seen it referenced in a few internet library indices.

He was laid to rest on the 6th of July 1907 in Detroit Michigan.

Part of the Biography by Ned Markey. He is a relative of Col. Poe's and Dr. Lyster's wives, who were sisters. He is a descendant of their brother. He can be reached at [email protected] if you have any further information to help him in his research and myself on the Chat Group so I can upgrade their Biographies. The Picture will be added as soon as I receive it and can get it scaned

Anything in Written in Italic was added by Pvt. Church.
